Winter offers many charms and interests in our area! The animals are in their full shaggy winter-coat glory and happier than ever to visit with you and your children. Feed them peppermints, take a pony ride in the snow, stoke up the wood stove inside, or head out for a winter bonfire... Spend the day at Windham Mountain skiing or snow tubing, and come back for dinner out at one of our sweet local restaurants.
As an added incentive, for the winter months we are offering free hour-long workshops on a wooly craft of your choosing, using our own wool. Learn to knit, needlefelt, handpaint wool, or fingerknit. We can adapt the workshop to your children's age, or your own interests. You would pay for materials, but the guidance part is free. Lots of fun and so lovely to work with wool by a window looking out over the very sheep who provided the wool... Email for questions or specifics. :)
Come enjoy life on a farm, just 2.5 hours from NYC! Guests to our farm stay get the best of farming, enjoying visits with our goats and sheep, and getting to know our friendly, adorable ponies.
Children can look for eggs, take a riding lesson on our adorable Shetland pony (for an extra fee), and snack on treats in the garden. We have a wooded nature walk on the property, with access (by appointment) to a kayak and a canoe to take out on our wide, sprawling creek.
We offer tours to our guests to meet the animals, see the garden, and visit with the animals.
The sunny 2-bedroom cottage (with a sleep/play loft) is in a renovated barn on 4 acres of pasture, creek, and woods, adjacent to the owners' 10-acres. Look outside the windows and you'll see ponies and sheep grazing in the pasture, and, quite likely, a flock of heritage-breed chickens happily free-ranging.
The apartment is fully furnished and comes with everything you need, including a fully-outfitted kitchen, towels, pillows, 100% cotton bed sheets, and blankets. Everything is recently renovated: new appliances, including a gas stove, dishwasher and refrigerator. Also new bathroom, and new pine floors.
Each bedroom (a smaller and a larger) contains a queen-sized bed with a cotton futon mattress. Additionally, there is a queen-sized futon mattress in the loft, and a futon-couch in the living room.
The living room and kitchen are in one large room, and are separated by a round farmhouse-style oak table and chairs.
Up a sturdy farm ladder is the loft, equally suitable for playing on rainy days, or for creating a third sleeping area. For winter getaways, there is a woodstove by the kitchen, and a woodpile by the driveway.
Outside of the apartment there is a lawn area with a fire pit and a Weber grill, perfect for grilling and relaxing. The lawn looks out, to one side, on the ponies' pasture. Here, two Shetland ponies are grazing, as is our Nubian goat herd, who would love for you to come and pet them, and maybe feed them your apple cores. Meanwhile, straight ahead and down a small hill, there is a pony paddock, and a stable. Our farm stock changes steadily, but there are always chickens and our extremely popular free-range bunnies, Juliet and Promise. Sometimes, depending on the season and the year: turkeys, ducks, chicks, pigs, lambs and goat kids.
There is also a private garden for the exclusive use of the cottage guests.
One of the highlights of this rental is that guests can take part in the farm activities. Guests are encouraged to look for eggs, and to enjoy a dozen eggs per weekend (if the hens are laying; in the winter they slow down on their egg-laying). Guests may also pet the goats, hold baby chicks when we have them, and pet the goat kids when we have them.
This rental is very family-friendly, and we have seen that children especially have a fabulous time visiting with our animals and taking part in farm life. It is a really wonderful thing to see a city child helping to round up the chickens, or gently holding the chicks, or picking green beans and tomatoes from the garden.
There are also trails through the woods, and a creek where our local wild population -- a heron, wood ducks, and beaver -- can often be spotted. We offer self-guided tours and scavenger hunts through the woods and farms for children. We also always supply a list of local food producers where you can buy meat, eggs, milk, cheese, soap, honey, etc.
We are located in Earlton, NY, a tiny hamlet that is about 10 minutes from Greenville and Coxsackie. In either of these towns you can find grocery stores, libraries, banks, etc for all your town needs. We are also less than 10 minutes from Boehm Farm, a family-run pick-your-own apple and peach orchard. Also 10 minutes to Greenville's incredible town park, which has several miles of wooded trails along stone walls and a river.
Further west, we are 45 minutes to Catskill National Park, including the world class skiing resorts, Windham and Hunter Mountains. In addition to skiing and snow-tubing, the Catskills offer spectacular outdoor destinations such as Kaaterskills Falls and North-South Lake, and other attractions such as Zoom Flume, a fabulous water park.
30 minutes south is the historic, artsy City of Hudson, a destination in itself. Here, you'll find an eclectic mix of antique shops that are almost like curated museums; wonderful restaurants like Grazin' (farm-sourced diner) and Baba Louie's (sourdough pizza and family-style salads), and comfy, groovy coffee shops like Rev. From May through October, there is a designated lot for food trucks.+ More
