Spending Family Day The Right Way
Dec 15, 2016
Blustery February weather is the perfect time to get the family together. Family Day is the perfect reason to bring the family together for some quality time. No matter how you decide to spend your time, a day together with the kids is never a wasted day. Here are some ideas to help you have a wonderful Family Day this year:
Get outdoors. Unplug from everything and strap on your snowshoes. Whether you visit a local park or head into a provincial park, snowshoeing is exercise, fun and fellowship all rolled into one activity. Even little ones can participate. Try hiking up north in Huntsville or in the Kawarthas lakes along the water’s edge. Snowshoeing is just one of the many winter sports you can enjoy together. Ice skating, skiing and even snow tubing are all winter favorites.
If it is just unbearably cold, stay inside and play some board games with each other. Monopoly is the perfect length for a long, snowy day. Apples to Apples will keep you guessing. UNO, Carcassonne and even dominoes are good choices when the wind is howling.
Cook together. No matter what age groups you have in your family, cooking is a popular way to be together. Tiny tots can stir or sprinkle in seasonings. Younger children can mash potatoes or measure out sticks of butter. Let the teenagers read old family recipes, use knives, ovens and stoves. Mom and dad can add liquors and fire for flambés. Sit down at the table and enjoy your efforts together. You can also try a delicious Pumpkin Chipotle Soup or a family favourite Cheesy Mac and Cheese.
Do crafts. Set aside Family Day for getting out the paints, glue guns and glitter. Wreaths, puzzle pictures, birdhouses – there are limitless ideas to make something fantastic for your home or friends. Little ones love glue and paint.
