Built by a European master carpenter, this beautiful A-frame cottage and its hand-carved wooden features will invoke thoughts of Hansel and Gretel – but luckily there is no evil witch within. There’s not even a Big Bad Wolf – unless you count the wolf sanctuary approximately 15 minutes away. However, it won’t be hard to make your own fairy-tale vacation and as for local wildlife, deer, foxes and other animals can often be seen as close as the end of the road leading to the cottage.
During the hot summer months, a swim in the lake is incredibly refreshing. A canoe is provided for slow afternoons spent exploring the lake, and boat rentals are available at the Lake Kennisis marina, approximately 15 minutes away. There is plenty of hiking and a visit to Haliburton with the many events that take place throughout the summer is highly recommended. When you’re feeling less active, relax in the large outside wooden patio area with a small flower and rose garden, enjoy the lake view from the master bedroom balcony or follow the concrete path winding down to the dock, to sunbathe and maybe occasionally lower yourself via the wooden ladder for a swim in the lake.
When the tribe gets hungry, the kitchen has a stove, fridge and microwave, or there’s a gas BBQ set outside on a stone grilling area. In the evenings, relax in the living room and dining room areas which open to a large porch area overlooking the lake, play one of a selection of family games, read the books you’ve been meaning to read all year, watch a DVD or listen to music on a Bose music system. Or you can enjoy stargazing under the blanket of stars at night; should you have an interest in astronomy, this is the place to be. If the cooler parts of the season, you’ll be cozy in the living room where a “Quebec heater”, a fireplace made of cast iron, radiates heat directly and through pipes going to the second floor and bedroom areas, essentially heating the entire cottage. There are also baseboard heaters which can be turned on in the living and bedrooms areas.
At day’s end, there are five bedrooms with room for seven people. At the top level there is the master bedroom, with a queen-size bed and lake views from its balcony. Two additional bedrooms are also on this level; one contains a double bed and the other contains a single bed. A winding, beautifully carved set of stairs leads down to the living room area.
For one or two people who want to sleep later in the morning there is also a small apartment accessible via a separate entrance off the path along the side of the cottage. It has two (single bed) bedrooms, a two-piece bathroom and a kitchenette area which contains a small fridge, dishes and hot plates. There is a small sitting area and desk. Large windows open completely onto another porch. Haliburton is the closest town, and the small community of West Guildford has a grocery store and LCBO only 20 minutes away.
