There are only two July weeks available to rent Kill Kare for the 2017 season: July 2-9 and July 16-23. 2017 celebrates our 10th year of renting and the 100th anniversary of our beloved family cottage. Kill Kare is uniquely and ideally located in a pine forest on a pristine freshwater lake on the Down East coast of Maine, 1/4 mile from the Penobscot Bay. So named because here you can come to truly 'kill your cares', the cottage has been in our family since it was built in 1917. Some have called it "magical". There is a warm and gentle spirit to this home. Guests find that it provides both energy and peace - a place to recharge and to unwind. It is a private and restful vacation spot and a perfect base from which to explore nearby Blue Hill, Deer Isle, Castine, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Reached by a mile long private road, the property is peaceful and quiet - with the only interruption being the occasional call of the loons. Sitting on the generous porch - which faces west - you feel as though you are on shipboard while watching lovely sunsets. A small private dock and swim float allow access to the lake for swimming and boating. Inside, a well-appointed living room is anchored by a large field stone fireplace. There is also an inviting dining room and a well-equipped country kitchen with eat-in space. This is lakeside living at its best.
Our unique location: Located on Walker Pond on the Blue Hill Peninsula, Kill Kare offers a relaxing and secluded privacy, but is very convenient not only to scenic Eggemoggin Reach and Penobscot Bay, but also to the beautiful New England towns that dot the Down East coast. All within an easy drive are charming Blue Hill (lots to do here), Brooklin (Wooden Boat School), Castine (Maine Maritime Academy and tours of their training ship, The State of Maine), Deer Isle (Haystack Mountain School of Crafts), Stonington (ferry to Isle au Haut and lobster co-op), Camden (home port to timeless schooners), Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Acadia National Park and all the activities they offer. This area boasts some of the most impressive maritime scenery in the US and offers excellent restaurants (think lobsters and blueberries!), lovely gift and antique shops, artist colonies, farmers' markets, book stores, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, golf and unsurpassed opportunities to discover the natural beauty of Maine.
A family home: Kill Kare was originally built as a fishing cabin because our grandfather loved the sport. Our grandmother collected antiques she found in the area. Our family has filled the house with friends and laughter since 1917. Kill Kare is an ideal spot for a family (or two) to enjoy together. Savor a morning cup of coffee on the porch and watch the mist rise from the lake. Spend a lazy afternoon nestled in the wicker swing with a good book . Take a kayak out on the lake or have a swim. Watch a spectacular sunset while sipping a drink on the porch and listening to the loons calling to one another. Lay out on the dock after dark and marvel at the night sky. The stars and constellations seem close enough to touch. Inside, snuggle up near a roaring fire in the field stone fireplace. The mounted fish over the mantel came from the lake. Share a family meal by candlelight in our welcoming dining room. Rest deeply as the sound of waves lulls you to sleep and your cares slip away. Please join us and make some memories!
