Property Description

Explore Detroit from walkable, safe village outside of Detroit. Featured on the cover of Detroit News Homestyle, the "house of rock" offers a unique, eclectic, one-of-a kind experience. The historic stone house is just 6 short blocks from Ferndale's vibrant downtown w/ restaurants, bars, & art. Everyone wants to be in hip, foodie-heaven Ferndale right now. Easy parking. Drive or use Uber 2 Detroit! Detroit tour avail. #movetodetroit

Artsy rock house is an all-stone house in a beauuutiful historic neighborhood with tree-lined streets, close to Detroit. We think the location is perfect because you are in the first village outside of Detroit, and it's the hottest place to be right now. We've got a fireplace, soft bedding, comic books, Detroit art, rock n roll vibe.

I'm Tamela Ekstrom. I own HAVEN Real Estate + Design, and I am a real estate agent/decorator/artist. My husband is Evan Derian, he is a graphic designer/illustrator and comic book artist. The art-work is created by us or by or our friends, or from our travels. If you are looking for something eclectic, in a great area close to Detroit. Most ppl come specifically for Ferndale restaurants and night life a few blocks away, but some come for the quiet cozy space.

We do live in the lower level with our two smaller dogs and elderly cat. if you need anything during your stay. You have your own private main level with private front entrance. As you can see from the reviews, we leave you alone to enjoy your stay, it's very private. We invite you to experience Detroit with the stone house as your home base. Some articles on the decor of the rock house can be found online under "Detroit News" + "Artistry in Motion".

Guest access

You would have a 1300 sf with private front entry, HUGE front porch, 2 bedrooms (one with KING BED, one bedroom with QUEEN BED) with soft bedding, 1 bathroom, dining room, living room, sunroom, FULL KITCHEN with stainless appliances: fridge, stove, dishwasher, coffee maker, instant hot water for tea. Easy street parking in front of the house or at neighbors house. Cozy gas log FIREPLACE!

No parties. No events. No smoking inside of any kind. No pets without owner written approval.

We do stay in the lower level of the property so we do reserve the driveway for our cars so we can get into our space through the back door.

Interaction with guests

If we are in town when you stay, and would like to meet me or us, I'm happy to do that. If you just want to be alone, no problem! We have lots of tips and info about Detroit, and being a Realtor, I know about all the neighborhoods.

I also offer a Detroit Neighborhood Tour for people thinking of making Detroit home, I can send you more info, basically info or tours from $100 (overview of Detroit neighborhoods that are popping) to $300 (half day tour) to $500 (full day tour). The info has been collected over the past 6 years through hundreds of hours of research, through living here and investing here. If you are thinking of a #movetodetroit, I'm the Realtor you want!

The neighborhood

Ferndale is the cool place to be. It is an artsy foodie enclave right outside of Detroit. It's a walkable neighborhood and it's just a few blocks to eclectic, fun, downtown Ferndale. There are lots of bars and restaurants within a few blocks! RustBelt market is a MUST SEE if you are here for the weekend and love homemade goods and Detroit artwork. Flytrap and Toast have excellent breakfasts and Imperial, Public House, and The Emory are favorites for dinner. New Greenspace Cafe has vegan food and yummy drinks. Go Comedy has open mics, there is also the Ringwald playhouse, with lots of intersting events.

Getting around

Anything you need is walkable in Ferndale: grocery, liquor store, CVS, car rental, ice cream, yummmmy food at cozy, ecclectic, fun restaurants with a 10 minute walk (10 short blocks to the downtown intersection but so much is even closer than that intersection). To go to Detroit you could use Uber or Lyft very easily if you just download the app. If you don't want to rent a car. If you want to rent a car, you can either do it at the airport, or we have Hertz within walking distance (7-10 minute walk). Enterprise is also in Ferndale, but probably a mile away. Zip cars are now available in Ferndale! 8-10 minute walk.

Other things to note

Minimum 2 nights on most weekends. This is a house with a main level and lower level. A lot of people wonder what it looks like where we stay, it’s completely renovated and decorated on the lower level as well so we’re very comfy there.

The main level is what we rent to you, it is an entire 1300 sf house. It's your private space and is separated with a locked door in between the two spaces. You also have your own private front entrance with large stone porch, thats all yours for your stay. You probably won't see us, we won't see you unless you need something. But feel free to ask us anything, we're happy to help!

House Rules

No smoking. Take shoes off at or inside the front door. No parties or events. May not be safe or suitable for children (0-12 years)Check in is anytime after 4PMCheck out by 11AMSelf check-in with lockbox. $10 for each hour early or later than Che i in/out and we usually need to know ahead of time to set up cleaning. Max 4 guests. We love kids, but we do not have a child-proof home and we have some fabrics and furniture that aren't kid-friendly. Please don't move the furniture without checking with us. Don't sit on tables or lean against furniture. No smoking inside at all, however you can smoke on the large stone porch that is your space.

Dogs considered under 25 lbs. must post multiple photos on Airbnb profile photo or email to me. No territorial breeds, it won't work because we have dogs and live in the apartment below the house. Dogs must be crated when you leave so they don’t scratch at the front door, chew on furniture etc. We may ask for current veterinary records showing your dog gets regular flea medicine. Back yard is not for guest use, you'd just need to take your dog to the front or for a walk, please pick up after your pet. There are plastic bags under the kitchen sink, the the right on the bottom under the wire shelf. I have more dog bags if you need them.

If you want to have a few people over, that's cool. If it's more than a small gathering (max 6 to 8 people total), we need to talk about it before you book. It's very important to us to keep our good relationships with our neighbors, and we also live below. If you would just text me when you check out, that would be helpful.

Dog(s) and cat(s) lives in the property, in our apartment below.

We were very comfortable and loved the mix of glam and historical architecture. Very unique vacation rental with great hosts in a very hip area of Detroit. Thanks Tamela and Evan for sharing your cool little house with us.

Unique find!

Tamela was very hospitable and showed us around when we first arrived. We only stayed one night but we were very comfortable. There are so many unique pieces of art and I found myself looking everywhere at everything! Thank you for letting us stay in this truly unique home.

Amazing, gorgeous, comfy house; friendly, helpful hosts!

Recently stayed in the Stone House for a birthday/romantic long-weekend getaway and would happily stay again. Tamela is an excellent host and was very responsive to any questions. The house is gorgeous and cozy with intriguing, fun decor -- perfect for comic book and/or rock 'n roll fans and art connoisseurs. (The owners' beautiful original artwork... Read More

Beautiful home Beautiful location

Wonderful artsy home in a beautiful area of Ferndale. Easy walk to restaurants and the happenings around town. Tamela is excellent to deal with and goes above and beyond to make sure you have what you need or provide local information on where to eat or places to visit. We would definitely rent this home again.
