Our private cabin is nestled among the cedar forest of our private 1.75 hectare lot backing on to the Tofino Mudflats Wildlife Management Area - where thousands of migratory bird species annually feed and rest - and our cabin derives its name - the Whimbrel.
Both secluded and private - we've done our best to build in the amenities we enjoy when we travel - local character, lots of light, surrounded by nature, helpful people.
Inside - enjoy local handcrafted wooden furnishings, skylights, a wood stove and a well equipped kitchen. Outside - the cabin is surrounded by ancient cedar trees, rhododendron gardens and a covered cedar and glass deck. We are right on the bike path and a 5-minute walk to Chesterman Beach and famous Tofino amenities like Chocolate Tofino, Tacofino, Beaches Grocery and the Tofitian Cafe.
The cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, 3-piece bathroom (with tub/shower combo), a counter with bar stools for casual eating and a cosy living area with two comfortable Mission style chairs - perfect for sitting in front of the Jotül wood stove with a book or glass of wine.
The upstairs bedroom has a queen size bed, plenty of windows and a skylight - perfect for those late night star gazers.
The large outside cedar (and glass roof protecting you from rain - we don't get any of that here!) has matching adirondack deck chairs, a propane BBQ, teak deckchairs and all the outdoor gear needed to relax and enjoy the west coast vibe at your pace and savour memories of Tofino.
All the cabin and contents, including the glass and cedar side-deck and BBQ and property surrounding the cabin are yours to enjoy.
At present, however, our forest paths with access to the 'inside channel' and Tofino Mudflats Wildlife Management Area remain rustic and not safe for guest usage. However, we are more than happy to provide directions to help you safely access these exquisite areas in our back yard. Please ask.
WILDLIFE: Please be aware that we share this land with various wildlife including wolves, bears and cougars. Please remember to avoid walking alone, never approach or entice animals with food, and keep your distance. For more information - read the pamphlet "Living with Wildlife" in our cabin.
EARTHQUAKE & TSUNAMI: You should also be aware that we live in an earthquake prone part of the world, and because we live so close to the ocean - we need to be prepared for the possibility of a tsunami and prepared to look after ourselves for a minimum of 72 hours.
As such, in your cabin, by the main door, in the unlocked closet on the left, you will find a 2-person "Grab & Go" knapsack. In the event of a prolonged (20 seconds or more) and violent shaking - please take the bag and follow the blue "Tsunami Evacuation" signs and get to 20 meters or more as rapidly and safely as possible.
TOFINO TSUNAMI WARNING SYSTEM TESTING: Every first Friday of the month at 11am, the District of Tofino tests the Tsunami Early Warning System that you will see at the north entrance to Chesterman Beach - an unmistakeable large white tower. We hear it loud and clear on our property. No need to be alarmed - but we like to be prepared. If you hear the Westminster Chime for 10 seconds - it is the universal "all-clear" signal, and all is fine.
If, however, there is a real emergency, expect a wailing tone siren, followed by a voice message indicating the level of alert, and instructions on what to do. You should tune into the local radio station Tuff City Radio at 90.1 FM for more information.
The cabin is situated midway along side the Tofino MUP - multi-use path - where you can safely walk, run, skateboard, roller blade or ride a bike - several kilometres in each direction.
You can take the MUP either towards the south edge of town and South Chesterman's or Cox Beaches or the great dining at the Long Beach Lodge. Alternatively, go northward and take in a beach walk at MacKenzie Beach, see what's growing at the Tofino Botanical Gardens, or grab a cold one at the Tofino Brewing Company (Industrial Road). When you're done there - head all the way into town and sample some local arts and crafts at the Eagle Aerie or Mark Hobson galleries, or sample some west coast food at spots like Shelter, Sobo's, Noodle Monster or Wolf in the Fog.
And, don't forget the Tofino Saturday morning Market at the Village Green - where - if it is baked, made, grown or gathered on the west coast - it's available from 10am until 2pm from May to October.
Finally - during the summer - from the end of June through to Labour Day look for the Tofino Shuttle Bus service - for free regular transportation. The nearest bus stop is at Sharp Road - turn right out of our driveway - and walk 2 minutes to the first intersection. It's just before the Dolphin Motel.
We live on site - in our home at the top of the hill - and you will see us - Trevor and Laura, our two young daughters - Lilli and Eva, and gentle white Labrador Retriever - Toby - coming and going - as we go about our daily business and routines.
We're equally happy to leave you on your own - or stop and chat and share travel stories or answer any questions you have.
We'll always do our best to help make your stay in Tofino a memorable experience.+ More
