Property Description

The Tall Pines Chalet was built by hand in classic Swiss style by a family of professional cabinetmakers. Special touches are visible everywhere, from two-inch-thick solid oak floors, to custom-crafted benches and cabinets, to hand-painted art on beams and railings. Although the home is less than 40 years old, its craftsmanship derives from centuries of European tradition.

As you can see, the home is surrounded by huge old-growth pine trees on a private five-acre parcel. Our land is bordered on two sides by natural, undeveloped National Forest.

Our little ranch is truly secluded. As you overlook the meadow which once held a Shoshone Indian village every Summer, the only sounds you're likely to hear are from the birds who come to drink from our pond, which is fed by a natural spring.

Hiking, cycling, snowshoeing, and sledding begin at your back door. Trails continue throughout hundreds of square miles of wilderness, and the Pacific Crest Trail is just two miles east.

If you're looking for a relaxing holiday retreat in the woods, staying in a home that overflows with warmth and traditional charm, this is the place for you.

We're new to VRBO. If you'd like to see lots of guest reviews, just ask.

If the Chalet is booked for your dates, ask us about alternatives.

Unfortunately, VRBO has no mechanism to quote rates by the size of your group. To keep our prices low for couples and new families, we start with a very low base rate for two guests. That's the rate you see.

Spring to Fall, two adults can rent the Chalet for as little as $89 a weeknight, or $119 per weekend night (plus tax and cleaning).

Typical ski season base rates are $124 weeknights and $169 weekends.

On major holidays like Christmas, the base rate reaches $399 each night.

After the first two adults, each adult adds $25 to $30 per night, depending on the season.

So, for example, four adults can stay in the Spring for $129 on weeknights, or $169 on weekends. In Winter, eight adults can stay for $304 on weeknights, or $349 on weekends.

Each child averages $10 to $15 a night. (For accurate quotes, let us know kids' ages.)

Pooches add a flat $30 each per stay.

Questions? Please contact us.

Inside the Chalet, you will enjoy a spacious living room with wood-burning fireplace, an adjoining formal dining room, and a large deck with BBQ which overlooks the pond, tall poplars, a broad meadow, and the towering pines. Weddings have been held in this meadow, which still shows evidence of its Shoshone heritage.

Located at nearly 7,000 feet, adjacent to hundreds of square miles of forest, this home is the perfect gateway to hiking, running, biking, horseback riding, sledding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

The Chalet is quiet night and day -- a perfect retreat from the city. No holiday traffic, no crowds...just tranquility.

The kitchen is roomy and equipped with full-size appliances (including new refrigerator, stove, oven, and dishwasher) plus all the cooking gear you need to create memorable meals. If you don't see what you want, just ask!

The home features two expansive bedrooms, each of which holds a large bed for two. One of the bedrooms is double the normal size, and also holds a bunk bed. Both bedrooms feature attached full bathrooms.

The living room adds a queen-size fold-out bed, and either the living room or a bedroom can accommodate an airbed or two. (Details for both homes listed below.) For maximum comfort, we recommend no more than eight adults.

All towels as well as bedding are provided.

A large hot tub sits at the edge of the forest (behind the former Cabinetmakers' Shop), and offers a commanding view of trees and sky.

The private Star Deck at the top of the property is a peaceful spot to read...enjoy the sunset...and view a truly stunning panorama at night.

Master Bedroom: 1 large bed for two.

There is also a standard sofa in this bedroom, with plenty of room left over for a crib or sleeping cushions for kids.

Forest Bedroom: 1 large bed for two.

This is an extraordinarily large room, which also holds a set of bunkbeds (2).

There is also a separate office/den area, separated from the bedroom by a curtain, which has room for a queen airbed.

Living Room: 1 queen sofabed for two.

There is also a second standard sofa, with plenty of additional room for a queen airbed.

  • Please note that the Chalet comfortably accommodates a maximum of eight adults.

Dogs are welcome (we have a friendly Lab and mutt), and the spacious dog corral can be shared. Charge is a flat $30 per pooch per stay.

Unfortunately, we can't accept cats. There are simply too many people who are allergic (including members of our family).

Note this major advantage over many rental homes: You do not have to cart your trash and recyclables in your car when you leave (be sure to ask other hosts in advance, as this is a surprisingly common requirement). We have multiple cans for trash at the property, and you can leave aluminum and bottles in the can on the porch.

We have wifi, and most wireless devices function well. The living room has the strongest signal.

Cell phones on Verizon and Sprint will have coverage, but last we checked, the AT&T and T-Mobile networks still do not cover this neighborhood. There is a landline available at our home.

We have two TVs, each connected to a DVD player. The TV in the living room can also stream from the internet.

We have a chess set and many board games. There's even a big electric organ!

You will find a charcoal BBQ, along with an outdoor dining table and chairs, on the spacious deck of the Chalet. We have self-starting charcoal for sale at our cost. A gas BBQ is available at our home (1065 G Lane), which is on the other side of the property.

We have a two-acre horse corral, plus hay barn and covered stall. No extra charge -- but you buy the hay!

There is easy parking and turnaround for cars, RVs, and trailers. Essentially unlimited.

The public bus stop is a short walk. It is actually possible to travel all the way here via rail/bus from any train line in SoCal!

Great cabin, amazing host and incredible snow!

Kiyoe was an amazing host to our 5 year old twins: came by ever morning and took them with her to feed the chickens! When we arrived Kiyoe showed us the spacious cabin and then we took some time to explore. We eventually found the tasty homemade cookies she left and fresh bagels, something you don't often find at a home rental. The week we were the... Read More

Weekend Adventure

The cabin was wonderful. It was spacey enough for all 8 of my friends to stay could have slept more. The jacuzzi was very nice to go sit in. If it had been colder however the walk to the jacuzzi wouldn't have been very fun. A few of my friends really enjoyed the trails around the cabin. They went on a hike everyday. The property was beautiful. The... Read More
