Flat Rock is a truly unique, breathtaking, 3 acre property on quiet Lake Bernard just five minutes south of the town of Sundridge and 35 minutes from downtown Huntsville. Visitors to Flat Rock are always impressed by the peace and tranquility provided by the private bays where very young children can learn to swim in perfect conditions.
This four-season home will appeal to the most discerning of renters who are searching for immaculate premises in a secluded setting. We welcome visitors who will treasure our 92 year history on the lake and related memorabilia. Our original summer cottage was renovated in 2009 to become a larger, modern retirement home. Its open concept floor plan, very high white pine, cathedral ceilings and panoramic views from abundant windows combine to create bright, spacious living areas.
From the upper deck level, garden doors open into a vestibule that houses a 1910 Heintzman piano for music enthusiasts. A focal point of the living room is the original brick, wood-burning fireplace now airtight with heating fans. Here, there is ample seating to enjoy fires or watch the 52-in. flat screen high definition TV. The formal dining room's antique mahogany table extends to seat ten. Two steps below are lower level sitting rooms with east and south facing windows. The sun room is appropriately named as nearly eighteen feet of eight-foot high windows provide a mesmerizing view of the lake.
Our fully-equipped, custom kitchen features Avonite counter tops, bar with two leather stools, pull-out pantry and double apron porcelain sinks. Enjoy pure well water from the drilled, 340-foot well. The adjoining dinette has twelve-foot, wall-to-wall windows and an antique tiger oak dining suite with seating for eight people.
Other building features include central air and central vacuum, security system, 36-inch doors and an automatic generator that runs the entire cottage in the event of a power failure.
Although we are able to accommodate a larger number of people, we prefer a maximum of 8 guests in both the summer months when our bunkie is open and the off season when our convertible bedroom or pullout couch can be utilized.
Bedrooms are completely private, occupying three corners of the building. Each offers a top end mattress for very comfortable sleeping, a ceiling fan and large windows with room-darkening blinds.
The king size, antique mahogany, master bedroom features a twelve-foot high, uniquely angled, white pine ceiling, a large adjoining walk in closet and an en suite bathroom that includes a two-person, six-foot soaker tub, separate shower, heated tile floor and optional baseboard heating for quick warm-ups.
A second king size bedroom is decorated with walnut family heirlooms. Guests can enjoy private access to the cottage's huge main bathroom featuring a 25 sq. ft. shower with two shower heads and seats, a 6-ft. cherry vanity with double sinks, and a separate dressing table.
There is an exit directly onto the deck from the lower level, queen size bedroom. This bedroom is smaller but features a ten-foot ceiling and a wonderful view of the lake.
A sitting room in the fourth corner of the cottage easily converts to a bedroom by lowering ceiling to floor blinds and choosing from new mattresses stored in the loft area.
In the lower level sun room a double pullout couch completes the sleeping facilities in the cottage.
The boathouse closest to the cottage was converted in the spring of 2010 into a comfortable queen size bedroom with additional seating on the couch or at the bar table overlooking the bay. This renovated bunkie sits on the water's edge and provides beautiful views through windows on three sides.
Our cottage is situated only 32 feet from the water's edge and the 500-foot shoreline offers two completely private bays divided by a very large, wide, fine white sand beach. An additional 200 feet of undeveloped, family-owned land adjacent to the property adds to the feeling of seclusion. Shallow water spans the entire frontage and a firm sandy lake bottom makes for excellent swimming. A gently sloping granite rock leads to the beach which opens to our beloved Flat Rock, surrounded on three sides by water. Here, and also on the long L shaped dock, you will enjoy sunshine from sunrise to early evening.
Shade is also easy to find in the many sheltered sitting areas on the property that are furnished with chaise lounges and numerous chairs. On breezy days, protection from south winds can be found on the secluded northern piece of waterfront property, whereas, there is shelter from north winds on the beach.
The dock can moor two boats and there is ample space on the beach to store watercraft without interfering with swimming and other activities.
Enjoy outdoor meals at the six-person patio table on the lakeside lower level of the deck.
Nearby are hiking trails, golf courses, grocery/hardware/LCBO stores, many restaurants, a gourmet butcher shop, boat rentals and medical, dental and vet clinics.
Lake Bernard Park is located directly across the lake from Flat Rock. Youngsters can enjoy mini-golf and it is here that a variety of watercraft can be rented on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. If you wish to use our canoe and/or our aluminum fishing boat, we require a simple, signed release of liability, waiver of claims and indemnity agreement.+ More
