About the Home:
"Kanien'kehá:ka" is the Mohawk name for "People of the Flint". This Roundhouse is a unique, energy-efficient, round-shaped home using a “stackwall” or “cordwood masonry” construction design.
The engineer and builder of this home has made every attempt to “go green” and used many re-cycled & re-purposed items in the construction of many of the interior features, such as the granite stone fireplace, which was constructed from stones found on the property. The kitchen countertops were formed from discarded crushed granite. The built-in ladder to the sun-flooded cupola was constructed from the handrails of a city bus! Much thought to the utilization of space has been given to this home to create a most unique and very functional habitat which never seems too small.
It is all a very open concept & exceptionally airey! The circular cupola ceiling & windows flood the Great Room with tons of sunlight! The decor reflects three themes: Music, the Beach & First Nations' culture. In particular, we are avid Beatles fans, lovers of sea & beach and proud of our Mohawk heritage.
Despite the home’s simple design and its relatively small, yet cozy, living space, it does have many “creature comfort” features such as a pinewood floors, wood-burning fireplace, fully-equipped modern kitchen, ceiling fans, indoor jacuzzi, air-conditioner, internet, large-screen TV, DVD player & a super stereo sound system. There is also an above-ground (unheated) swimming pool, new sun deck & cedar gazebo with a propane BBQ.
Guests have EXCLUSIVE access to the entire Roundhouse, (except garage & small barn). Entry is by electronic keypad with your own personal code. Access is also granted for use of the swimming pool, (in season), & to the vast grounds with its abundant nature.
Interaction with Guests:
The Host is sometimes onsite in a separate building, but your privacy will be respected at all times. You will be greeted, checked-in & checked-out by either your Host or Hostess, (the owner's sister who lives off-site).
Other Things to Note:
Please note that although there is no WiFi, there is Internet through an "ethernet" cable, which is suitable for laptop computers.
It is not unusual to be visited by wildlife, (squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, skunks, turtles, pheasants, songbirds and even deer!). We respectfully ask that you do not feed the animals because that would interfere with their routine natural feeding habits.
The area is rural, but with several homes on large lots along a well-maintained gravel access road. A neighboring private stable frequently exercises their horses along the road.
Occasionally, the signal horn of a passing train can be heard cutting through the predominant tranquility of the area.
A car is essential if you want to visit nearby town and attractions. There is no public transportation. Parliament Hill, in the nation's capital city of Ottawa, is just a quick 50 minute drive.+ More
