Winters bring lots of snow but few really freezing days, and lots of sun. Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley have merged to form the largest ski area in the US, with 6,000 acres of terrain. Your ski pass is valid at both and there are frequent free shuttles between them. Back country and cross country ski opportunities abound as well. In addition to Alpine/Squaw, six other downhill areas (including Homewood, Northstar, Donner, Sugar Bowl, Heavenly and Incline Village) and three Nordic ski resorts are within a short drive. And when you are done with that, relax in the hot tub or sauna, then toast by the fireplace!
In summer Alpine Meadows/ Tahoe has some of the best hiking, boating and mountain biking in the world, all in close proximity to the spectacular Lake Tahoe. Some years you can ski on the 4th of July, then rent some kayaks at Sandy Beach and paddle to a private cove for an afternoon of swimming and lounging, all in one day. Or you can bike right from Alpine Meadows down the family-friendly bike path around the lake. For some lazy fun, raft down the Truckee River with family or friends. You can hike or bike the famed Tahoe Rim and Flume trails, or take off on the Pacific Crest Trail just minutes from your door.. Nearby jeep trails include the Rubicon Trail. For kayakers, besides Lake Tahoe, there are Donner, Stampede and Boca lakes nearby. For more sedate tastes, there are cruises on the lake, golfing, or fishing, or wine tasting and fine restaurants. And you can count on perfect weather. The nights are cool, the days are just comfortably warm; there is almost no rain and an average of over 300 days of sunshine a year.
Despite all the activity, Alpine Meadows is completely commercial free, without the noise and congestion associated with being in a ski village. Shopping and excellent restaurants are in Tahoe City or Olympic Valley, just 8 minutes away. You have all the advantages of a world class resort, yet a tranquil environment where the loudest noise is the stream outside your bedroom.
