A big, awesome, new, open, high-end home in the heart of an old-school Santa Monica neighborhood.
If you're looking at homes rather than hotel rooms, you've probably got at least a few people in your crew who can see the benefit of not being right in the thick of the crowds and traffic that take over the beach area each summer in Santa Monica. Let's face it: nobody wants to go the beach every day, and even if you did, you've got to give that sunburn a day or too off every once in a while.
That's why this location is so great: lots more local flavor, lots less crowds, and more convenient access to everything else LA has to offer.
Arriving at this newly-constructed custom home (2014) on a quiet tree-lined street, you've come to the right place for a new and elegant house with all the amenities you would expect on the inside, along with all the culture and cuisine you’d want on the outside in this highly walkable neighborhood. And if you do happen to be traveling with kids, this house has a few features that will get them excited about your trip instead of complaining about leaving home.
From the old-growth tree-lined street, enter through the hand-crafted and stained front gate (childproof!) to find the house’s unique side entry, a configuration which brings both privacy and security in knowledge that the little ones won’t go exploring unattended. When you enter the welcoming yellow front door to the foyer, on your left behind a unique sliding barn-style door is a spacious living room (or 5th bedroom); ahead of you is a curving grand staircase to the second floor; and to the right, past 8-foot french doors to the shady North Patio, you’ll find an inviting hallway to a great room which unites a spacious indoor-outdoor residence with the modern flair and entertaining ability of a hand-crafted designer home.
In the great room is all the technology and convenience you would expect of a house of this stature, with ample space and seating to give up to 15 people lots of seating options to enjoy the 65" tv and in-ceiling stereo system. Either sit together to chat around the nook table or island, or disperse to the family room and outdoor patio to take in a game or lounge in the shade of the pergola, or make s'mores over the fire pit. In the kitchen, a massive island welcomes casual seating for 5 to chitchat and sip drinks after a hot afternoon at the beach. For meals and casual snacking, the kitchen “nook” table is almost 9 feet long and seats 10 comfortably (12 if kids pack along the window seat), all surrounded by bay windows and light. For more formal dining, there is an authentic vintage mid-century modern dining set, separated from the family room by a wide natural-stone buffet.
The kitchen is a chef’s dream, with a full suite of Thermador Professional appliances: massive 6-burner stove with built-in electric griddle and 2 ovens; TWO DISHWASHERS (because who wants to worry about running out of space); massive side-by-side fridge and freezer; warming drawer to keep those gourmet dishes at just the right temperature; and a magical touch-activated faucet. And you’ll always have fresh veggies because every Saturday morning there’s a farmers market just a block and a half away, at the park at 22nd and Pico. Or, if you’re more of the take-out kind of person, there’s a wide variety of top-notch cuisine (recommendations below), and a high-power Thermador microwave for re-heating.
For dining, there is a formal Danish modern dining room, or the kitchen "nook" table seats 10-12, depending on how many are kids.
For your morning and afternoon coffee, choose from a full arsenal of a Cuisinart drip coffee maker, a hand-pack Gaggia espresso machine, and single-cup Keurig. Or go to one of the 5 non-Starbucks coffee shops within a 5-block radius.
Outside through the wide sliding doors, a grassy yard and beautifully stained redwood fence surround a pergola-shaded patio with fire pit. And if you’d like there is also a tiny plastic picnic table for the 5-and-under set.
When it’s time to turn in for the evening or relax away from the group, you’ll find four inviting suites, each with its own bathroom. Downstairs is a guest bedroom which is outfitted with a Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams queen-size sleeper sofa selected for our most demanding guests. Upstairs you’ll find three bedroom suites. To the left is the kids bedroom with two lofted beds connected by a custom platform with two ladders (because two is better than one!) from which no child ever wants to come down, and an orange bathroom with design that parents will appreciate and kids will find “fun”. In the middle of the upper floor, beside the massive laundry room is another suite configured with a full-size bed.
Last but definitely not least, down a window-lined hallway is the delectable master suite. The bedroom itself is huge and open, with indirect lighting, a cal-king bed, a gym-quality elliptical trainer, a gas fireplace with mantle, and a 40-inch smart TV for watching your favorite shows or movies. In the ridiculously large bathroom you'll find his-and-hers vanities (different heights); a massive soaker tub; a large walk-in closet; a separate toilet room with "full service" Toto toilet seat; and a steam shower of matte, sky-blue glass which will make you feel like you’re floating in a cloud.
Outdoor amenities will delight as well: An outdoor shower to wash away the beach sand before you come into the house. A shady north-side patio with 6-seat table for relaxing on warm summer afternoons. A top-quality adjustable basketball hoop in the driveway for practicing your dunks or a simple game of horse. And in the back you'll find a gas grill and fire pit for cooking and/or chilling.
Or, if you’re entertaining young ones, Santa Monica’s two best parks are each within a 5-minute walk. Just 4 blocks east is Clover Park, at 25th and Ocean Park Blvd, which has a running path, sports fields, basketball court, playground, volleyball, a unique kids’ tower, and tennis courts (you can use our rackets). Or walk 1.5 blocks “north” to Virginia Park, just on the other side of Pico Blvd, where you’ll find more serious basketball games, another great playground, and a cool splash park for kids with hoses and fountains to get wet on hot afternoons.
Our favorite restaurants within a few blocks: The Counter and Shaka Shaka (for burgers), Ocean Park Pizza for the best New York style pie, Crimson Cafe (for Mediterranean fare), Miyako Sushi (for good sushi) or Tokyo Sushi (more upscale), Tandoor India, Uplifters Kitchen for hip California cuisine (think Silicon Valley lunch food), and finally Local for upscale dinner just 4 blocks down Ocean Park. And that’s just like 10% of the places within a half-mile radius, not even including the pack of lunch trucks which frequent a spot a mile away on Ocean Park. You could eat at a different restaurant every night without ever getting in your car, though a 10-block Uber ride to Upper West is highly recommended, along with a bar-crawl down Pico (via Barkowski and the Daily Pint) on your way home.
If you want good food and drink AND quiet tree-lined streets, and you want to be able to walk to great parks and restaurants in any direction, and you want to be 5 minutes from the ocean but you don't want to be crowded in all day and night, Sunset Park is for you. It’s certainly for us! We hate to leave during the beautiful summer season, but hey, that’s when school is out, so come visit our beautiful town while we’re visiting someone else’s.
[The Tesla: If we can work out the insurance situation (not sure about that), we’d consider renting it for an additional charge. Otherwise it will be stored in the garage.]
