St. Croix known as "The Big Island" is the largest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands. It was first inhabited more than 2,000 years ago. The Arawak Indians resided on this island for years, until the unfriendly and war like Caribs overtook the island once known as Ayay and forced the peaceful Arawaks out. St. Croix is a documented site with Christopher Columbus' exploration of the New World in 1493. Notable, the Caribs and the Spanish battled over the island for more than a century. St. Croix has flown seven different flags. The island was under the rule o the Spanish, Dutch, English, French, Knights of Malta (who renam ed it St. Croix) and the Danish before becoming part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. On St. Croix the rum factory continues to keep the tradition of making rum from sugar which is an important part to St. Croix's economy and culture.
