"Don'T Go"

Reviewed in for a trip in August, 2015

I initially sent my review to the owner since he kept telling me to write a review. This is what I had sent him:
"The cottage wasn't the cleanest but it wasn't as bad as we had expected. The front room is a mess. The kitchen and living room was pretty cramped. We did see mice but they were outside. The owner said that they were coming from the woods but we're pretty sure that they were all living under the house. The front door had a gap between the door and the frame and we assumed that if nice were to get in, it would be from there so we ended up covering it. There was firewood provided. One of the BBQ's grill was half rusted and both of them were really dirty. It took us 2 hours to clean the one we used. The controls of the BBQ weren't working as we couldn't control the heat levels. The outside of the cottage was a lot better than the inside. There were a good amount of chairs for the outdoors provided. All in all, the cottage was not as shabby as the other reviews make it seem although there could be a lot done for improvement."

This is what he wrote back:
"Billy told me u liked the cottage, otherwise I never would have contacted u about a review, why would I want that posted, 2 hours to clean a BBQ, nobody's ever complained about that before, controls are abit off but i never had a problem, most people just use tinfoil on the grills anyways, and why complain about mice if they weren't even inside, we keep fixing that screen door, my handyman could've done stuff like that again had u asked, u didn't even mention the beautiful lake or electric motor I provided u
U saw the photo of the screened in room (front) and knew what to expect
There were lots of other people that wanted to rent my cottage that time and wish I had
Please never contact me again"

My response (which he will read here):
"2 hours to clean a BBQ, nobody's ever complained about that before, controls are abit off but i never had a problem, most people just use tinfoil on the grills anyways"
To this I say that if you're planning on using tinfoil on the grill, then we might as well use the oven. What's the point of having a bbq in the first place.

"why complain about mice if they weren't even inside"
The reason for the complaint was that in one of the previous reviews, he responded that the mice come from the woods. Almost every cottage that we've been to is surrounded by woods but none of them had mice. This is clearly a problem which is specific to this cottage. The mice are living under the porch. The only reason they didn't come inside was because we had blocked off the front entrance.

"my handyman could've done stuff like that again had u asked"
Why should we need to call your handyman for repairs on your cottage? You should have taken care of it from before.

"u didn't even mention the beautiful lake or electric motor I provided u"
The "beautiful lake" is still beautiful because it is self maintained and you have absolutely nothing to do with the lake. The pictures of the lake can be seen from the pictures of the cottage and do not need any mention. As for the electric motor, yes he allowed us to use his electric motor. We didn't mention it because a) it was pretty slow b) there were no proper tools left in the cottage to remove the nuts from the electric motor. We had asked the owner if we would need tools and he replied saying that they were butterfly nuts (can take off without tools) and when we got there we realized they weren't. We had to make a makeshift tool to get the nuts off. Even after the charge, the motor wasn't going to fast.

"There were lots of other people that wanted to rent my cottage that time and wish I had"
One of these was another one of my friends and even after we had booked it, he emailed my friend asking if he still wanted the cottage. After he had confirmed that it was booked for us. Obviously there were other people who wanted to rent at the time but the reason you chose us was because we came first.

"Please never contact me again"
With Pleasure!

Just one more thing I'd like to add. This cottage trip we made was with friends. The week after, one of the guys who had come to this cottage trip went to another cottage which was a bit further than this one. He paid the same price but the cottage was much nicer, bigger, cleaner and provided many activities. And it was lakefront. Don't settle for this cottage unless you have to.

"Great Cottage"

Reviewed in for a trip in September, 2015

We spent the long weekend in September at this cottage. I did read very mixed reviews, but due to the fact that not a lot of cottages were available for a long weekend on a last minute search , we decided to book it.
William responded to all my emails very promptly, was flexible with checking in- checking out hours. Yes , the cottage is a bit dated, the kitchen and screened in porch requires renovations ,but at the same time the cottage has everything you need for cottage vacation, and we just never used the screened in porch. We brought our linens and towels. Each bedroom had 2 pillows and a blanket , but we brought our own, we always do. The kitchen has great amount of plates, cutlery , Lagostina pots and frying pans.
The main bathroom was clean, we never used the second 2 piece bathroom, which was also all right.
The living room is relatively small, but with the nice view of the lake and big l-shaped couch, which was actually very comfortable for sleeping. There is big TV and good selection of movies and games. There were two large barbecues on both decks ,but we haven't used them. The view of the lake is just breathtaking . Yes, as it was mentioned in some reviews, the paint on the docks and stairs is peeling , but it didn't really matter to us, because the structure itself was solid and we felt safe even to walk barefoot. The lake is relatively small , but clear, deep and very quiet. We used a boat and kayak a couple of times. The entry into the water is right from the dock to a 5 foot deep water, which is great for adults. The view of the lake from all decks and the dock is just amazing !!!! I would suggest to bring camping chairs if you like to seat on the dock.
Overall , if you are a nature lover , and don't expect a 5 star hotel in the wilderness , this place is for you.it was 9 of us at the cottage , 8 adults and 1 kid and everyone was happy with the stay at this cottage, none of us wanted to leave.
William , thank you very much for everything and we all hope to be back again to your lovely cottage next year.

"Horrific"

Reviewed in for a trip in August, 2015

We stayed at this cottage from August 10-14 2015, I can't even explain how disgusting this property was. We were shocked upon arrival of the state of the cottage. The screened in porch which is advertised on the site was not a screened in porch it was actually plexiglass, it was also filled with junk and was completely unusable and the smell was unbearable. The stairs going down to the dock and what looks like a new deck is all peeling and in not very appealing, the chairs and outdoor furniture were all broken and some were held together by bungee cords as well as extra pieces were broken off the chairs which made them unusable. After I had spoke to the owner on the phone and he said there was lots of outdoor chairs to sit on. Well the interior of the cottage, every morning we woke up to lovely mouse droppings on the counter which were probably entering through the open spaces under the stairs. I can't even explain the disgusting comforters which were supplied to us that looked like they had been rolled in the dirt and put on the beds. Upon arriving and finding this disgusting mess I contacted the owner asking about the cleaner that was suppose to come, well an hour later 3 people showed up 2 of them being young kids and cleaned the cottage with some water and dirty rags. Once they left and the state of the cottage obviously had not changed I contacted the owner with my concerns, he came by about an hour later and brought some sos pads this obviously was not going to fix the multitude of problems. Reading the review written in August 2014 and the owners comments back to that review most of the complaints have not been resolved. This is absolutely not worth the money there asking, I would not even pay 10 dollars to stay here. This should not be rented until it is cleaned up. I have several pictures to show what a shocking mess this cottage was.

The Property Owner added the following response:

The tenants were very earlier the cottage was still being cleaned the tenant told the cleaners to leave I bought supplies cleaned the washrooms myself and brought firewood which I dont normally. The screened in room does have plexiglass the screens are constantly get bugs/animals going in rather than fixing them all the time I put plexiglass She complained there was a smell in the room but there wasnt I offered to clear the room for them but she said no they cant use it because of the plexiglass. I brought 2 brand new Adirondack chairs a table there was plenty of outdoor furniture to use and nothing was held together by bungee cords She complained about my solar panels Its true that the deck has some peeling but most outdoor stains dont last its structurally sound and its integrity is not affected. There is a washing machine if she found the comforters needed cleaning my cottage is in the wilderness mice may be present. I asked if there was anything else I could do she said no

"Beautiful Cottage On Gorgeous Property"

Reviewed in for a trip in September, 2014

Myself and 5 of my friends were quite concerned about staying here after the august review of this cottage, but had it booked already so stuck with our chioce. We all cottage together somewhere every year so we've had some experiences. We were all immediately relieved on our arrival. It is no where near as bad as the review said.
Thats not to say it doesnt need some TLC, but it is clean, well laid out, and overall very nice.
The only bad things we can say is it definitely needs a new couch, a clean up in the sunroom, and yes mice are getting in somewhere.
There are two bathrooms, one is in the sunroom. Both very nice and well kept. The kitchen area is dated but not bad. The bedrooms are all nice, yes bring your own bedding (doesnt everyone when you go to a cottage anyways....)
Now to the outside. Its beautiful. There are two very nice deck areas, and the boat dock, where a canoe and two row boats are. The muskoka chairs will need replacing soon, and there are two picnic tables.
The lake is awesome. Great fishing, and beautiful to canoe and swim. If you like nature and outdoor adventures, this place is perfect. Shortly after arrival my boyfriend spotted a black bear along the road, and there was a moose the day we were leaving.
All in all needs a little TLC, but great place to cottage for a week, we will be returning again, and if more things are in better repair then, then we will continue cottaging here for many years.

AS THE OWNER OF THE COTTAGE I WANTED TO POINT OUT SOME ERRORS CELIA MADE IN HER REVIEW, I DO MENTION THERE ARE 2 WASHROOMS BUT ONE HAS A SHOWER AND TUB AND THE OTHER DOESN'T, I DO TELL EVERYONE TO BRING BLANKETS AS WELL, THERE IS A WASHING MACHINE THERE THEY COULD USE IF THEY WANT TO WASH SOMETHING, THERE IS ALSO A PROPANE FIREPLACE IF IT DOES GET CHILLY AT NIGHT WHICH IS MENTIONED IN EVERY AD, THE WATER IS POTABLE AND COMES FROM A DEEP SPRING WELL, THE HORNET'S NEST WAS ADDRESSED RIGHT AWAY AS I HAVE A HANDYMAN THERE THAT TAKES CARE OF THINGS FOR ME, HE WENT 4X TO DO THAT FOR THEM, THERE ARE NO RATS THERE, JUST MICE, IT IS IN THE WILDERNESS AFTER ALL. SOMETIES TENANTS BREAK THINGS LIKE THE SCREENED DOOR AND WE CANT FIX THINGS RIGHT AWAY, IT WAS FIXED A WEEK AFTER, THE EXTRA FRIDGE IN THE SCREENED IN ROOM WORKS AND IS A BACK UP JUST IN CASE, SOME TENANTS USE BOTH FRIDGES, IT'S TRUE THE INTERIOE NEEDS A COMPLETE MAKEOVER AS A NEW FLOOR, PAINT, SOME FURNITURE, BUT IT'S NOT BUCKINGHAM PALACE AND IT IS A RUSTIC COTTAGE, I ADDRESS ANY COMPLAINTS SERIOUSLY AND IN DUE TIME TAKE CARE OF THE SITUATIONS

"Filthy And Neglected Cottage In Lovely Location"

Reviewed in for a trip in August, 2014

We were very disappointed with this cottage. The location is stunning, having driven half a mile along a bumpy drive through wooded greenery you arrive at what can only be described as a hovel. The discarded trailer and portaloo do nothing to enhance the experience, but the nest of hornets in a tree by the front door and a resident large mouse (possible small rat), are not exactly welcoming.
The photos in the ad are very outdated as they fail to show the peeling paint and rotting picnic tables. Although we visited in August the nights were chilly, it was therefore annoying to find no bedding apart from some well used and stained pillows. The owner told us to bring linen and towels, but didn't mention the need for blankets or quilts. In previous cottages water has been provided, given the secluded location it would have been helpful to know to bring water with us. The only soft seating were two sunchairs presumably brought in from the deck by previous tenants, and a filthy sofa that belonged on a tip. There was a second filthy sofa in the porch.
The mention in the ad of a screened porch is laughable as the space is unusable partly because of the broken screen door allowing easy ingress for mosquitoes, and partly due to the junk that is kept there - two broken fridges, two unusable washing machines and an old cooker, all covered in dust and grime.
Our first reaction when we arrived was to go straight home, but we decided to give it a chance. The location is lovely. Very quiet, a beautiful lake, where we swam, fished and boated. However it was difficult to shake off the general feeling of neglect. The exception to this was the bathroom and toilet (not 2 bathrooms as claimed in the ad) - these were well appointed and clean apart from the mouldy shower curtain.
This could be a perfect cottage holiday if the owners would spend some time and money repairing the many defects.

"Excellent Cottage"

Wonderful experience spent in this very fine cottage, quiet lake, wonderful view, and complete privacy. We "owned" the lake for the week we spent there.
