Welcome to Braeside. Braeside, in the language of a Scotsman, means on the side of a hill, and that certainly is a perfect name for our mountain home.
Our home is a joy for people seeking the beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Smoky Mountains. Our home is a 3 separate level Log cabin which is spacious & homey, with a lot of interior pine paneling. The house feels like a mountain home. The location is secluded and located only 0.4 mile off the Blue Ridge Parkway. One end of the house is mostly glass for making you feel close with the outdoors. There is a wrap-around deck on 2 sides and part of a 3rd side. Rain or shine, the views are incredible, especially in the fall or when the mist moves over the treetops.
We furnish many things in the cabin. Guests say the place is well equipped and you only need to bring your meals, toothbrush & yourselves. Everything else is there. We pride ourselves in making our guests feel at home! We do suggest that you have a GPS to help you find the attractions in the area.
The mountain views in the surrounding area are amazing. You can see the top of Hinson Mountain from the house and there are many things to do in and around the home. There are views from the deck, upstairs balcony, dining area, and the living room. The house is surrounded by trees.

About our home:
This lovely home has features for everyone! Fabulous views & wonderful breezes! The home is decorated with prints of mountain scenes, by famous artist Bob Timberlake and Cotton Ketchie.
We have Formica countertops, hardwood flooring on level 2 and 3, and new carpeting & new laminate flooring in the basement. You & your party are very important to us, so we try to make the home comfy & inviting with everything you need.
We have 3 bedrooms, 1 bedroom on each level. There are also bathrooms on each level plus an additional half bath on the main level. Each bedroom is equipped with a flat screen TV and a DVD player. The upper level bedroom has a king bed, and en suite bathroom with a tub/shower. Outside the upstairs bedroom is an interior balcony, sitting/reading area with a flat screen TV, with a great view out the expansive windows. The balcony also overlooks the main floor living area. The main floor bedroom has an Amish, handmade, rustic pine, queen size bed with an en suite bathroom, including a large walk in shower. The lower level bedroom is equipped with a queen size bed. There is a spacious bathroom right outside the bedroom and directly across the hall.
The main floor, or Master bedroom will have the bed made for you, the remaining sheets will be left out for you to choose the bedroom that suits you.
You will enjoy preparing meals in our well equipped kitchen. Also grilling on the huge gas grill on the back deck. Everything you need is at hand! For those not helping in meal preparation, there is high speed internet WiFi, a total of 5 flat screen digital cable televisions, each of which is accompanied by a DVD player. If you have a Netflix account, you'll have no trouble downloading movies with the high speed internet to the lower level or master bedroom television. Our home has plenty of places to read & play games.
After a day of hiking, you might want to wash your clothes in the stackable washer and dryer on the main floor. Later, you can watch digital TV, get on the internet or watch a DVD.
For that romantic touch, turn on the gas log fireplace on the main floor, or watch the digital flames & pulsating embers on the electronic, ambient heater, simulation fireplace in the basement.
In the mountains, cell phone coverage can be spotty, especially traveling the Parkway. Verizon seems to provide the best coverage. Keep this in mind while away from the home. At the home, we do have a land line for receiving calls or making local call. The land line does not include long distance dialing. Texting should work for any phone while in the home.
The home is great for reading & relaxing. It is so quiet & peaceful. I have never heard a siren, and you rarely see, or hear, a car. You can just sit & do nothing on one the exterior chairs on the wrap around deck. So many ways to enjoy!
Outside the home, you will find a reflection bench off the deck located on the top of a mossy knoll with long range views. This secluded home has irises, mountain laurel, and a large number of rhododendrons, which is what inspired the name of the address, Rhododendron Run.
The night time views are spectacular since you do not have any big city lights illuminating the sky. The stars seem so close you think you can touch them. We have a pair of binoculars too!
The Cabin is situated in a small neighborhood just 0.4 mile off the Blue Ridge Parkway. However, the distance from the parkway to the house is 0.9 miles. The last 0.5 miles is a gravel road. The private, gravel, driveway to the house is over 900 ft. long.

The property is wooded & nature is a few feet away. Deer and other wildlife frequently walk by right outside the house. We have seen deer out the window only 15 feet from the house. The community is great for walking. Note, if you are hiking less traveled wooded paths, wear long pants & before coming into the home, please brush them off & park muddy boots outside the door.
Our guests go spelunking at Linville Caverns, hike, bird watch & boat at Julian Price Lake just off the Parkway, white water raft at Wahoo, bike on Railroad Grade Road then tube at Todd while others go trout fishing or horseback riding at Leatherwood. Guests have found Wilson Creek and the New River to be good for canoeing & hiking; excellent swimming is at Elk River Falls. Great Shopping at Tanger Outlets in Blowing Rock.
The Blue Ridge Parkway area has many Birding sites. One is located at Julian Price Memorial Park; another is located at Elk Knob near Todd.
If you want to go to NC gem mining sites there are many mining sites less than 1 hour away. We hear western NC is a fabulous place for gem mining.
You will love your day trip to laid back, historic West Jefferson, Boone, or Blowing Rock. Kilwin’s ice cream shop is a must do at Tanger Outlet, which has great shopping, as well as Tweetsie for the kids (April-Nov). Boone is famous for Appalachian State & Mast General Store, plus Dan'l Boone Inn, where the food is terrific! The Saddlebrook restaurant in Leatherwood is open on weekends spring-fall for some tasty fare. When out food shopping you can use one of the Styrofoam coolers we have in the closet on the lower level. The coolers also come in handy on a day trip, to keep sandwiches & drinks cool.
There are guide books at the home to find the less-traveled hiking paths off the Blue Ridge Parkway & a book listing the locations of waterfalls in the area. Please return these to the home.
Stays from mid-November thru the end of March, 4WD or AWD is best, and make sure you have ample provisions!
A home away from home, free of all the trials & tribulations of a hectic pace!
Thanks for your interest & welcome!
