Property Description

Hello fellow travelers! Our beautiful casita, located at Orchid Bay in northern Belize is in a cozy isolated community about a half hour from the nearest town. The Bay is shallow and the water is warm and brackish. Every night, with a cocktail in hand, you will see the sunset from the comfort of your hammock in the 216 sq ft screened in porch.

The casita is 1150 sq ft and can sleep up to six. Depending on the length of your stay, it would be very cozy for six adults. A queen bed occupies the spacious master bedroom, there are two twin beds in the loft and there is a futon in the living room. (which can sleep two) It is fully furnished with all the comforts of home including a refrigerator, stove, microwave, small appliances, dishes, cutlery and wine glasses. The unit has air conditioning, a fan and a TV and DVD player (no TV service) in the living room and the bedroom. There is also a fan and light in the loft area. There is hot and cold running water and the tap water is safe to drink. Our casita has a single bathroom with an oversized shower with Mexican tile. The casita has beautiful Belizean hardwood interior and a thatched roof as you can see in the pictures.

Orchid Bay is a remote isolated quiet get away to reacquaint with that special person or wind down from the hustle and bustle of your hometown. As mentioned above, the bay water is brackish and the color and visibility vary during the dry and the wet season. If my wife and I want to go Scuba Diving, we'll get our manager to book us a flight over to Ambergris Caye where the diving is world class. You can spend some time on the two supplied bikes riding over to a few nearby eating spots or checking out the local Cerros Mayan ruins.

Options for getting to Orchid Bay :

1) Fly to Belize City Int'l airport (BZE) and rent a 4 x 4. (most agencies have them) A car is not recommended. Once you get off the paved Northern Highway, the roads to Orchid Bay are dirt, gravel, bumpy, rough with potholes, may have water patches and be slippery during the rainy season. Definitely can be an experience. There are two options to drive to Orchid Bay. (each takes approx 2 1/2 hrs and we will provide a map)

a) Take the paved Northern Highway to Corozal and then the last 3/4 hr is on a non-paved road as explained above. You will also have to cross two rivers on hand cranked ferries to get to Orchid Bay. The ferries are open 24/7. These are pretty cool as you can ask the gentlemen if it is ok for you to crank and they will gladly oblige. They are quite short to get across (five to ten minutes) This is the best way for your first time to Orchid Bay.

b) The second option is to take the paved Northern Highway to Orange Walk. Then turn to San Estevan, Chunox and then to Orchid Bay.

2) Fly to Belize City and then hire a transfer to drive you to Orchid Bay. (we will recommend one for you)

3) Fly to Belize City and then fly to Corozal. Hire our recommended transfer company to take you to Orchid Bay (approx. US$45) or rent a vehicle from them in Corozal. The cost is approx. $80/day including insurance. Belize has two national airlines : Tropic Air and Maya Island Air.

5) Fly into Cancun and then take Tropic Air to Belize City and then do one of the options above.

6) Fly into Cancun and rent a vehicle. Make sure you ask if the vehicle can be taken across the border to Belize.

7) Fly into Cancun and take ADO bus lines to Corozal, Belize and then get our recommended transfer company to pick you up and bring you to Orchid Bay.

Additional Amenity Description

There is Wi-Fi at the casita and the Tradewinds restaurant for connecting back home. The service is very good but Belize is known to have unscheduled outages from time to time. I will say sorry in advance for those periods. We also provide you with a local cell phone to use during your stay. Our manager can purchase minutes for you.

You can practice yoga on a secluded dock just steps from the casita or jump into a game of Volleyball, Horseshoes or Bocce. You can dip your toes in the Bay of Chetumal or enjoy some paddleboarding and kayaking or just laze around and sunbathe. You can go for a walk or jog around the property or climb the stairs up to the top of the water tower for a majestic view of the Orchid Bay Beach Club and Chetumal Bay. The nighttime star gazing is awesome, especially from the palapa out on the Pescadores dock. It's a nice spot to sit out with a glass of wine and listen to the waves gently lapping against the shore. Depending on the time of year, you can watch the fire-flies lighting up the mangroves.

You may see some cool critters on the property such as gecko, anteater, deer, fox, hummingbirds, fireflies, coatimundi (raccoon family), frogs, many different birds, snakes, scorpions, tarantulas, crocodiles and perhaps even a jaguar. The jungle is indeed just a stone's throw away. If you're lucky enough, you may see a manatee at the Laguna Seca ferry crossing. The gardener (Herman) has also done a tremendous job of planting an abundance of flora on the property. We have apple bananas, habaneros, avocados, coconuts, pineapples and mango growing on site.

If you don't feel like cooking then head over to the Tradewinds Restaurant where David; the manager, will set you up with some jalapeño poppers and a beverage and then you can move on to the daily specials. They have local and western cuisine and make a delicious homemade salad dressing that will surely get the taste buds flowing.
