Property Description

“Oh my goodness, it’s so quiet.”

That is what our guests say upon waking up in The Barn. (Or, so they tell us.)

“The Barn” is what we affectionately call our 150 year old home. Originally built in 1867, it was a working dairy barn. The previous owners partially converted it in the early 1990’s. “Partially” means there is an unrenovated side to the building with a grand space that is available for weddings, parties and artist retreats during the summer months.

Available year round is a three bedroom, three bath, 2700 sqft home located on 3.6 acres.

The Barn is situated on a paved country road less that half an hour to skiing, state parks and outlet shopping. Depending on which road you journey to The Barn, you might see nature preserves, fields of corn or sheep frolicking A dairy farm located across the street completes the bucolic atmosphere. At the end of our private driveway The Barn greets you with the promise that this is no ordinary house.

The Barn is nestled into a hillside. This gives the impression the front of The Barn is three stories while the back is two stories. That bottom story is the basement and where the cows used to be milked. The chicken coop, now vacant, still sits on the properties right side hill. The owner learned how to ski on the gentler section of that hill. The more level backyard is accessible through the screened porch, small gate on the right side and large gate on the left side. The yard is fenced but care must be taken to insure small dogs and cats do not squeeze out or fall prey to hawks or bald eagles. Yes, we have a pair of bald eagles nesting in the neighborhood. The backyard is large enough for a nice game of fetch, catch or to toss a frisbee. Wild blackberries and roses are prolific on the property.

There is ample room to park five vehicles on the gravel in front of The Barn. Please do not park on the grassy field to the right as that The Barn’s septic leach field.

Exhale all your tension as you step into the airiness of the vaulted ceiling living room. Original, hand hewn beams can be seen here and throughout the house. Two couches face a cozy fireplace with retro green tiles and a rustic beam mantle. Behind the couches a “nook” houses an upright piano and third, comfy couch.

Walk into the nostalgically tiled kitchen to find the six burner range of a gourmet, commercial Grizzly stove waiting for you. The large porcelain farm sink looks out onto the deck offering a view of playful birdlife amongst the wisteria and trumpet vines. The french door, stainless steel fridge completes the room.

A sliding door lead off the kitchen into the screened porch. Here is an excellent place to dry your boots and skis or prep Fido for that game of fetch in the backyard.

The dining room is located just off the kitchen allowing for conversations amongst family while cooking. The dining room table seats six and offers views of the backyard that include birdlife and our antique windmill.

Behind the dining room is the laundry room complete with an High Efficiency washer, dryer, iron and ironing board.

There is a bonus room off the living room with two futons and space for extra guests.

The downstairs bathroom features a shower stall.

Rest awaits you on the second floor.

The medium size guest room features a queen sized bed, wicker drawers, closet and a cherrywood secretary desk.

The small guestroom has a twin bed, bureau, closet and a desk. There is also a bean bag chair for bedtime stories.

The second floor guest bath as a shower over the tub.

Walking across the landing takes you past the bumper pool table that converts into card table with a flip of its cover.

The master suite is privately located on its own side of the house. It has a king sized bed, walk in closet and private bath. Relax after a long day skiing, hiking or shopping in the jacuzzi hot tub. The house is private enough that you could pull up the shade by the tub and gaze out over the wisteria vines to the yard. There is a also a shower stall and his and hers sinks if soaking is not in the agenda.
