Property Description

Unplug in wonderland every season. In a high clearing in the middle of the 103 acre woods of Patchwork Farm, the Hermit's Hut is a sweetly "primitive," cozy and comfortable get-away. Perfect for hikers, snowshoers, birders, writers, and hermits.

Truly a fairytale wonderland in every season. Set in a high clearing we call "Moose Meadow" in the middle of the 103 acre woods of Patchwork Farm Retreat, the Hermit's Hut is a sweetly "primitive," cozy and comfortable get-away. Unplug as much as you wish.

It is lovely to have no electricity, no running water, a solar shower and a compost bucket cherry-wood outhouse. By the time you make the 10-minute walk on beautifully-maintained trails through fern-filled forest of towering oak, maple, birch, beech and ash, bearing your worldly goods in the Little Grey Donkey Cart or Serious Sled, you will be well on your way to leaving your worries behind.

In various seasons, white-tailed deer browse, moose wander, bear forage under stumps, and birds of all description--warblers, Barred and Great Horned owls, Hermit Thrush, Ovenbirds, Pileated woodpeckers, Ruffed grouse and wild Turkeys--abound.

The small wildlife pond, hiking/skiing trails, gorgeous trees and stone outcroppings delight and entertain everyone who ventures here. You can even put a map of our trails on your mobile device and mark where you are along the way.

The Hermit's Hut is a completely private, insulated tiny wooden house with big windows, a screened porch, a good double futon bed-sofa in main room with a view of the rising moon. A glass-fronted wood stove keeps the Hut cozy on the coldest days. Cooking facilities in the Hut include a 2-burner propane camping stove (which must be used on the screened porch or out of doors); a cooking surface on the wood stove; and a stone fire ring with round grill. There are plenty of pots, pans, dishes and eating utensils, plus a water dispenser and ice chest (bring your own ice).

You will be completely self-sufficient for your basic needs in all seasons, thanks to the outdoor solar shower and compost outhouse.

In winter, to balance the warm, cozy feeling of being "snowed in," you can venture out on our groomed X-Country ski, snow shoe and hiking trails. You might spy tracks of deer, coyote, fox and even moose.

If you can't quite unplug all the way, your smart phone works at the Hut and you may charge it in the main cottage.

Nearby family-owned restaurants, Straw Bale Café and Outlook Farm, serve delicious breakfasts and lunches. In winter & early spring, if you're lucky, local maple shacks will be boiling syrup, and you can go to Steve's Sugar Shack right in Westhampton for pancakes, eggs, coffee and see how "sugaring" is done.

Beyond our miles of trails, hiking, snowshoeing, Nordic skiing elsewhere is not far away: the 12-mile "Seven Sisters" trail along the Holyoke Range, the dramatic Chesterfield Gorge, Wm Cullen Bryant Homestead, Notch View Reservation, and many other Trustees of Reservations properties are within 20 minutes drive. For swimming and kayaking/canoeing, the DAR State Reservation is excellent and only 15 minutes away.

Westhampton is a rural community of only 1400 folks, but our Town Center is home to a wonderful new library, open to all; the historic Blacksmith Museum; and a classical New England town hall and church, complete with towering spire.

Northampton is close by and has been voted the Best Little Arts City in the US. Home to Patricia's alma mater, Smith College, it offers lots of shops and galleries; and restaurants serve food from all over the world. River Valley Market and Cornucopia are terrific natural foods grocery stores. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are only 25 minutes away. For a small fee, PeaPod delivers groceries right to your door from Stop & Shop Supermarket.

Patchwork Farm is 15 minutes from vibrant Northampton, 20 minutes from Smith College, 20 minutes from Easthampton with its bakeries, bookstores, art galleries; 35 minutes from Amherst (UMass & Hampshire College), 40 minutes from South Hadley (Mt. Holyoke College) and the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, 50 minutes from Jacob's Pillow, Kripalu & Tanglewood. We would love to welcome you.

Guest access

Guests have full access to the 100 acres of Patchwork Farm Retreat through a printed map of our trails, plus a GPS map of trails on contiguous open woods. Depending on the season, you will love hiking, snow shoeing, X-C skiing on our four-plus miles of trails.

Interaction with guests

We enjoy meeting and visiting with our guests, but we are equally aware that you probably choose the Hermit's Hut as a getaway from "all that." So, we are always glad to see you, but your time is strictly your own.

Other things to note

The Hut is a ten-minute walk from your private parking space. We provide a cart or sled, depending on the season, for transport of your belongings.

We also provide a base supply of tea light candles, two solar-powered lanterns and firewood. For outdoor fires, you are invited to collect deadwood and kindling from the woods around the Hut. Like in a fairy tale....

Please ask if you will need special assistance getting to and from the Hut.

Check in time for the Hut is 3:00 pm; check out time is noon.
