The Owls Burrow's well-appointed four-room apartment dwells at the base of Patchwork Farm Retreat's main cottage on a little mountain in 100 acres of forest. The living room and bedroom overlook gardens, terraces, the Pioneer Valley's Holyoke Range and flanks of Mount Tom. Its front door opens onto hiking trails, ancient trees and mysterious gatherings of stones.
The Owls Burrow has its own private entrance. It's a comfortable, well-appointed self-sufficient apartment, with four rooms: cozy living room with love seat sofa/bed, reading chair, work table & chair, flat screen with DVD player; glass entry door and windows offering a lovely view of gardens, bird feeders, and the Pioneer Valley; full bedroom with queen bed, dresser and closet; a kitchenette offering full refrigerator, a toaster oven, microwave, counter top burners, small double sink, and complete sets of dishes, utensils and cookware; small, full bathroom with tub & shower; adjacent large dressing room and fully stocked linen closet.
If you want the peace of quiet spaces to dream or to work, for solitude or gentle conversation, you will find them here, as so many writers and artists on personal retreats have done. And in 15 minutes, you can be in Northampton's lively arts, music & restaurant scene; and only 35 minutes brings you to the heart of Amherst.
We welcome guests of all backgrounds and lifestyles.
As our guest, you are welcome to roam the grounds and miles of marked, woodland trails, and to relax at our Angel Pond at anytime. Guests of one week or more, or who have special needs, are welcome to use our laundry facilities, upstairs from the Burrow.
Interaction with guests
We are glad to offer assistance as you need it, and we always love to talk with our guests. But we know that you may seek a place like Patchwork Farm Retreat to experience the peace and quiet inspiration to be found among trees and great stones, so we are available only when you wish us to be. But--don't be shy, if you want company!
We love the woods, rivers, and lakes, but especially we love the people in these Western MA hill towns. We are a small town, but our new public library is a place of pride and enjoyment for all. Visitors are sure to love the local cafes at Outlook Farm on Rt 66 (10 minutes), and Straw Bale Cafe (7 minutes) on North Road, as well as the historic Blacksmith Museum in the center of town, near the iconic white-spired church.
Within four miles, Bread Euphoria serves delicious home-made breads, soups, sandwiches, pastries, full meals and awesome coffee--and free, unlimited WiFi. Restaurants abound in nearby Florence and Northampton (15 minutes).
A bare 17 minutes from Smith College, Northampton's lively downtown, and the vibrant art scene of Easthampton (especially Luthier's), the Burrow gives scenic access to the Berkshires, Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, The Mount, Rockwell and Clark museums, Williams College, MassMOCA.
Public parks and reservations for hiking and snow sports are within easy reach, as are lakes and rivers for kayaking and swimming.
Our favorite restaurants in Northampton: Paul & Elizabeth's; Mulino's; Seven Strong (pricey and elegant); Con Vino; The Great Wall Chinese; India House. In Easthampton: Coco's; the Galaxy.
For guests without private transportation, we have found Uber drivers to be reliable and helpful. And for on-line ordering and dependable door-to-door delivery of groceries, we recommend PeaPod on line, an affiliate of Stop & Shop grocery stores.
Other things to note
Patchwork Farm Retreat's miles of mapped, well-marked, scenic trails give pleasure to our guests in every season. Angel Pond reflects beauty year-round and guests are invited to drag deadwood from the surrounding forest and enjoy the bonfire pit and picnic table on its shore.
