The big draw for the area is the lighthouse which was closed to the public from Nineteen Forty-Nine to Two Thousand Six. Now you can go up it. Walk miles of shoreline on the soft, fine sand. Watch the windsurfers near the lighthouse - one of the best windsurf spots this side of the lake. Keep an eye out for the endangered Piping Plover shorebirds running along the tide. There is a small dune town with mini golf and go karts, etc. that is a 10 minute drive away. There is also dune buggy rides, seasonal berry picking, and a local fish boil that sells out at Cherry Point Mkt. on most weekends. The best kept secret is the dune park access from the water. Just walk down our steps and into park, but bring your sandals/shoes as the dunes can get hot and the dune grass sharp. Also sunscreen, water, binoculars, and a hat make it more enjoyable too. Seek out stone beds and look for "indian beads" or walk through after a storm and look for fulgurites - a delicate glass formed when lightening hits the sand. Or be extra brave and walk all the way through to Silver Lake watch out for dune buggies by looking for grooves in the sand from their designated paths!
2017 peak season is June 10- September 9 are Saturday to Saturday full week bookings only. We ask that you bring your own bed linens/towels for your visit. We do our best to get the place ready for you, but please be understanding and bring your own supplies for the week. There is a fridge and a gas stove range and basic cooking pots/pans silverware. There is hot water for shower. There is a grill outside- standing, but slightly smaller than standard size (you need charcoal which we do not supply). Be careful with fire/coals in the area as it can get very dry which creates a fire hazard for all of the dune brush and houses around the property. Bed in master bedroom is a full size. Please do not pitch tents in the front lawn either. Mention the keywords "dune berry" in your inquiry and I'll know you read these details. :)
It's about a 4.25 hour drive from chicago/burbs depending on traffic. Drive the speed limit and no higher through Holland/Grand Haven ... it's a major speed trap. About 1.25 hours from Grand Rapids.
