Property Description

Please read this as it has a lot of helpful and important info: The activity and appreciation of the Poudre Canyon never ends, but the sheer energy that draws people to raft, fish & hike always amazes me. Easy access to the cabin during the winter, making outdoor activities more inviting. Snow shoe, hike, ice fish or just stay warm inside and take in the beauty. Crisp air, clear starry skies & the sparkle of the river are unmatched. Spring will bring new wild flowers, rams and deer to the roadside and the canyon changes once again. The road's curves remind us of the importance to slow down and enjoy the ride! This is a cherished place on earth! Pack a picnic and drive the full canyon to get an understanding of the Rocky Mountains! Drive a dirt road or two, take a hike (none will disappoint) & get away from it all! Or, do nothing at all & simply catch up on rest, reading, and peace & quiet. The earthy tones of the cabin will soak you in!

In case you don't think you have a reason to visit, we'll share a few:

  • Honeymoon, anniversary or any other romantic get-away!

  • Christmas Tree cutting area is near the cabin. Make it a full weekend adventure!

  • Girls weekend get-away!

  • Peace-of-mind / recharging retreat

  • Family time exploring the mountains!

No mater what you love to do, we guarantee there is something for you. We can certainly help you decide what might be most comfortable for this mountain location. Approx 1 hr drive from north Fort Collins. Perfect addition to your Steamboat trip!

Two private bedrooms with comfy beds. Open, yet private, loft with queen bed. Spacious and beautiful 'cabin' with special outdoor & wildlife touches. John & Liz (owners) built the cabin themselves in 2007 and have now decided to share this with others. We hope that you enjoy & respect the hard work and the unique offerings (including many locally hunted mounts) and also find The Poudre Canyon to be an incredible area to visit again and again.

There are a few little things that make a big difference since this home is at high altitude (7200') with large temperature variations, it isn't continually occupied, and, of course, there are just simply some quirks:

Water - you will be provided with large jugs of water for drinking & cooking. You may wish to purchase bottled water when you do your shopping. The cabin is on a well and the quality of the water changes from time to time, so we do NOT drink the water. Showering and cleaning dishes & laundry are fine. You may want to bring water bottles that can be filled for hikes, etc.

Stay hydrated - Colorado air is very dry and it is important to stay hydrated, especially at higher altitudes. Altitude sickness is real so please adjust slowly and be aware of your fluid intake.

Be prepared for all types of weather in the mountains. Water, snacks, rain gear, layered clothing, good socks & shoes (hiking boots), and a basic survival kit are vital. Even if it looks nice, Rocky Mountain weather is ever-changing. Hypothermia and lightening are true dangers if you're not prepared!

Appliances -

  • Frig - please note that the water and ice maker are not set up in the refrigerator due to the variations in water. Ice is available at the local convenience shops.

  • Water pump - must be turned on/off upon arrival/departure. Switch is in the back right bedroom.

  • Water heater - do not change the temperature of the water heater. This is an on-demand water heater, so if you set the water too hot you will immediately get a blast of cold - - best to keep the temperature moderate.

  • Washer (clothes) - light takes some time to come on once you press power.

  • Dryer - please remove lint after each use.

  • Coffee maker - Keurig & standard coffee makers available. Grind coffee in a separate grinder (provided) rather than using the one associated with the coffee maker. Empty your grounds in the garbage after each use. Remember to use bottled water, not sink water. Don't forget to buy coffee in town!

  • Dishwasher - please do not overload. Water spotting may occur. Detergent is provided.

  • Garbage disposal - only allow small items to go down the drain, even with the disposal. Please all food items in the garbage. Do NOT put any grease down the drain. Please let grease/oils solidify and then add to the garbage.

  • Septic - pee, poo, TP only in toilets and no grease down drains, limited food items in disposal too. Female and baby products should be disposed of in the trash.

  • Un-plug small appliances (toaster, coffee maker/grinder, floor lamps, etc.) when you leave.

  • Shower - glass MUST be squeegeed after each use. Simply 4 stripes down will do it. Very difficult to clean once the spots dry!

  • Windows - some open well and some don't. Please be gentle with the windows, only opening to the point that they allow, and do not attempt to open the ones marked 'do not open'. Close them at night and when leaving the house.

  • Heater - the heat will be adjusted to a moderate temperature prior to your arrival. Note that heat rises, so sometimes the loft can be pretty warm & the main bedrooms will be cooler. Please use the ceiling and floor fans as necessary.

  • Garbage - Do not leave garbage or coolers outdoors as you will attract bears which will cause problems. Guests of the home can use the dumpster up the road - on the left before you get to Archers you will see a driveway to a house with a red roof that has a graffiti painted dumpster. This is for guest use only. Please do not leave garbage in the home when you check out.

  • Dirty linens/bedding - please strip all beds that were used. Separate sheets from blankets/comforters. In respect to the environment, septic system, time for cleaning, etc. please only dirty what you truly need to use.

  • Bath & kitchen towels - please leave hanging so they can dry rather than piling them up.

Staying in contact with the rest of the world (if necessary):

  • Phone - there is no phone provided at the home. Verizon customers seem to do best. Wi-Fi is available which offers several options including Facebook calling, etc. (please explore prior to your trip). Pay phones are available at Glen Echo and Archers.

  • WiFi available - code provided when rented. Remember your laptop, and also camera, binoculars, and outdoor equipment.

  • TV - Roku & DVD player available for your use while resting on the really cozy couch!

Emergencies - 911 will connect you with local volunteer responders. The nearest hospital is Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. Ambulance and helicopter response is available as necessary thru 911. If phones do not work, run up to Archers (.5 mile up the canyon) as many community members are EMTs or visit the fire station (less than 3 miles up the road).

Shopping - you will want to do your primary shopping in Fort Collins prior to your trip up the canyon. There are a few convenience/gift/restaurant type stores within a few miles of the cabin, but the selection is quite limited, is packaged-food, and prices may be higher. Definitely stop in to each to get a feel for the canyon and gather resourceful information. There is a lot of history and pride related to The Poudre Canyon. Local events take place fairly often, so check in at Archers or Glen Echo for information.

Things you will want to purchase in Fort Collins:

  • a full tank of gas

  • food - for the time you'll be there (spices and some baking & cooking basics are provided)

  • wine/beer - if you prefer a certain type, you will wish to buy this before going up the canyon as there is only a small liquor closet at Archers.

  • bottled water

  • coffee & creamer

  • sunscreen & mosquito spray

  • ice (available at the stores in the canyon)

Games & movies are available for when you're tired of hearing the river roar and the hummingbirds hum!

Items that are currently off limits due to liability issues (fire, drowning, etc): Wood stove - currently not for guests use.
Hot tub - currently not for guests use. Popcorn maker - currently out of order.

  • Any unauthorized use will result in additional charges to clean/fix issues.

Cleaning fee - the cleaning fee may seem high so we'd like to explain that this location has limited resources for doing laundry quickly, plus there are only so many locals available to assist with cleaning. Please help keep costs down by maintaining your surroundings each day and limiting the use of bedding, towels, etc. Many thanks.

We may have forgotten a few things, so please just ask if you have questions. We'd rather have you enjoy your vacation than cause yourself headaches trying to figure something out. Also, damage occurs when people take risks, so if you question your actions, just stop and call us for details, approval, etc. We really don't mind being contacted instead of dealing with problems later.

Enjoy, celebrate, relax, adventure, and remember to share your memories on-line and in our guest book!

Thank you.
