Halifax Cottage Rental
Cottaging in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was one of the best vacations I can remember with my family. We went several summers ago. My parents rented the cottage for the whole extended family: my husband and two kids, my sister, her husband and two kids, and my parents’ two dogs. We all flew down, rented a car, and drove to the beautiful cottage we were to enjoy for a whole seven days.
It was a little unfortunate that the cottage wasn’t lakeside. It meant that we all had to rent cars.... But, we did have a pool in the backyard, and it was heated — that alone made up for the lack of lake, especially since the weather wasn’t so hot. That, I must add, and the sweet (not-nerdy) minivan we scored because they ran out of smaller cars. Oh, and it was pretty convenient that we had a laundry machine at our disposal — it’s amazing how many towels and clothes you go through on these summer beach vacations!
In the mornings, the kids enjoyed time in the heated pool. And, in the afternoons we’d venture out to the nearest sandy beach, or to the artsy shops in the downtown core (which are always a hoot). In the early evenings, we’d go to the historic downtown waterfront, watched the boats in the harbour, and enjoyed the boardwalk shows and, simply, the energy of being on the water among the sailboats and stunning MacDonald bridge. We also stopped to walk through some of the colourful gardens in the area.
The restaurants we went to were, of course, mostly seafood restaurants, but I was pleased with the vegetarian options and the overall kid-friendliness.
The nights were filled with rented movies, reading, and just chatting the night away, sipping coffee, tea, and perhaps a beer or two. And we did leave our parents at home to watch the kids one night (or two) while we checked out the local pubs and lively nightlife for which Halifax is famous!
Our cottage trip to Halifax was one of our favourite family vacations. It was great to see this very unique and beautiful part of Canada and to experience its lively, artsy culture. Staying in a cottage made it personal, homey, and convenient for us, and gave us the space to be together as a family the entire time.
Of course, there are various kinds of accommodations in Halifax. Be sure to check out CanadaStays.com for listings, and, as always, book well in advance!
