Heaven on the Island
We spent a week at this lovely home with our two boys- age 17 and 20. The house is beautiful with views of the ocean everywhere you look. Having four bathrooms was so handy and everyone got their own bedroom. Perfect location for Hwy 19 to all touristy places but far enough from all the tourists when you return home! We ended up doing all our food shopping at Quality Foods right off of Northwest Bay Road. We stargazed from the hot tub and watched cruise ships sail by... there is a resident seal we named Lucky that came to visit every morning and night RIGHT in FRONT of the house. We saw deer; rabbits; turkey vultures; eagles; and many birds flying and diving into the ocean for their food. The water was too cold for me to go past my knees but my sons went in and enjoyed themselves...I waited until we went to RATHTREVOR BEACH and the tide came in over the warm sand...ahhh heaven! Check out BEACHCOMBER BAY in the Nanoose area...beautiful homes on the peninsula and a nice walk out to a quiet beach where we did geocaching. QUALICUM BEACH: -ate fish and chips at the BEACH HUT...buy their soft ice cream flavors...good deals there. PARKSVILLE: Sandcastles... & listening to the bands on the boardwalk was so nice and relaxing! COOMBS: bc everyone told us they had goats on the roof...yes they did...but the best part was the ice cream restaurant there...the flavour selection! WOW! AND they had a store that sold every item you would ever look for. I bought 225 dollars worth of wood toys for my workplace....but there was food; fresh; frozen; and all kinds of pastas; salmon(we hoarded the candied salmon; fresh Norwegian cheeses; and a loaf of bread to eat a lunch on the road!). We loved it there so much we went back another day! FANNY BAY: to see the seals lounging on the logs. Winter time the california sea lions hang out there barking...take binoculars. HORN LAKE CAVES: I am a big chicken of the dark and tiny spaces but I wanted to try caving so we went on the 2 hour tour in the RIVERBEND Cave. You walk 25 min up to the cave (being out of shape we were sweating to death and huffing and puffing)...we didn't find the 8 degrees in the cave cold at all! BUT do upgrade your helmets to the stronger lighting...so glad we did. CATHEDRAL GROVE PARK..800 year old trees, walk both sides of the road, easy pathways well maintained. Take water. Graeme and Ava...thank you for beautiful memories we shared with our children in your stunning home!
