For One Week, A Stay in Heaven
As much as crossing Big Mac and having Michigan’s Upper Peninsula take on a whole different aura than its Lower Peninsula sister, it was just as much of a sense of entering a whole new world when we delved into the U.P.’s Keweenaw peninsula, compared to the remainder of the Upper. Blessed with wonderful weather for a week last August, we headed for a "Superior Cottage in a superior location", a charming point of respite, located on the beaches of Lake Superior. This location served as our central base as we traversed most of the entire Keweenaw peninsula. Even from here, the farthest points north and northwest of Copper Harbor and Eagle River, were only about an hour away. There was so much to do that we were challenged to hike all of the trails and gaze in wonder at all of the waterfalls. Clear streams, big pine forests, and plenty of charming hamlets made this location a great place to stay and a great place to start each day. And since the cottage faces east, each morning we were treated to the most gorgeous sunrises; pinks, oranges and purples greeted us early each morning as we took our first coffee on the front porch. Leave your Wi-Fi’s, Gameboys and DVDs at home. You won’t need them. Instead, a short drive from the cottage will afford you the opportunity to pick all of the finest blueberries at Pancho’s Blueberries, or buy the five- or ten-pound box. Just be sure you get enough. Our only regret was that we should have bought more to bring home for the freezer. There were more than enough amenities at the cottage to allow us truly to take in so much: we laid on the beach, barbecued, read...completely relaxed! And, one of the highlights of my stay there was to kayak for the first time in my life – but not just some inland lake or river – but rather kayaking on a tranquil morning on Lake Superior. What made that extra-special was paddling past two pair of resident bald eagles who make their nests high atop lakefront treetops just to the south of the cottage. Paddle by them slow, and they will watch you watching them. What else can we say? Comfortable, cozy and well-prepared, this place will more than serve all your needs. Once you stay here, you will definitely want to come back.
