Locked out in the storm / no refund
By way of background, I booked this residence in advance for an extended visit during the most important annual conference in my profession. By the day of my arrival (day before conference), all of the hotels in San Fran were either sold out or raised to $1000+ per night. After a 3.5 hour drive through the storm of the century that saw most flights canceled, I was relieved (and exhausted) to finally get to this property. I stood in the rain trying to follow the multiple steps given by the owner to access the key. When I finally got to the lock box, the code given to me was already programed in, and there was NO KEY!!!! As the owner did not leave a contact number (for what reason I have no idea) for problems, all I could do was email the owner through the VRBO portal and wait in the pouring rain for a response. After an hour of standing outside of the unit in the rain, I decided to try to get a hotel room for the duration of my stay. After another 2.5 hours and multiple hotel contacts, I was finally able to secure on of the $$$$ with the jacked up prices. Finally the owner called back (once I already finally checked into an overpriced hotel), saying the key was in another lockbox other than the one provided in the instructions. I told the owner that I also tried the code in the second lockbox but it wouldn’t open. His response is that it has a different code that he did not provide in the access instructions?!?!?!?! Really?!?!?!?!? No offer to make it right, etc.?!?!?!?!?!? Lesson learned – 1) don’t book a VRBO rental with no reviews when you have important business to take care of and 2) dont book at VRBO rental when a phone # isnt provided. The owner has not been responsive to my emails requesting a refund, so at least the lack of communication on his end is consistent. Look elsewhere
