Cute, comfortable cottage near Volcanoes Nat'l Park
Alii Kane Cottages are a bit out of the way and if you don't have a rental car I wouldn't consider them. However, if you have a rental car and plan on going to Volcanoes National Park then I highly recommend this place. Susan & Michael have 2 cottages on their property. My family of 4 adults stayed here for one night and it worked out perfectly. Location is great, we flew into Hilo and stayed at Alii Kane to visit the nearby Volcanoes Nat'l Park and drove further South to Punaluu beach. Small kitchen was serviceable, we were only there on night so we only used it for coffee and toast. Speaking of toast, our hosts provided us with a loaf of bread to sample their local jellies/jams - which were amazing. I think we ate the whole loaf by the time we left! The upstairs loft fit 2 adult children, though it was just a mattress on the floor. The loft was big enough to fit more, but their was only one mattress. Small children, under 7 or so, may not be old enough to sleep in the loft by themselves, though their was a gate that could be shut for the upstairs in front of the stairs. The downstairs bed was very comfortable. The small porch was great, and there was plenty of room for parking. Upon arrival Michael greeted us and introduced us to the area. A binder was provided with information & suggested activities/restaurants in the area. Prior to arrival Susan sent us several emails with all the necessary information. Overall, I would say this place was great. If you were staying for a longer period of time, the 1 bathroom may be less than you need for 4 people. And there isn't much privacy, but for a family it works just fine. Wifi wasn't perfect, but it's dependent on satellite and worked better than expected.
