A unique vacation, with a few hitches
We really enjoyed the experience of seeing gorgeous Maui camping in a Vanagon. It's definitely an economical way to get transportation and lodging all in one if you are willing to camp out on the side of the roads (which we did). We loved being mobile and able to really explore the entire island without a set agenda. We ended up with a few hitches in our vacation due to the Vanagon basically losing its transmission function a few days into our trip. Heather was very communicative and easy to work with, despite being sick and dealing with some other personal issues at the time. She exchanged the broken down van with her other one and we were able to resume our vacation. There are a few things about the vans that will definitely add character to your experience. They're obviously not anywhere near new, so don't expect a perfectly functioning vehicle without quirks. One has an alarm that goes off periodically (a buzzing sound), one has a window that needs to be rolled up with a screwdriver (though she's planning to get it fixed), sometimes they need a rest when you're going up and down hills, and you're not able to do the road up to Haleakala (we ended up hitchhiking). So, as long as you're willing to take on some quirks with a sense of humor, you'll have a great time! We did LOVE Maui and would definitely do this again.
