Seventeen Days of Tranquility
If you are seeking a tranquil, relaxing and spacious oceanfront home, this place is perfect. Dining on a lanai with an ocean view is but one of this home's attributes: others include spacious bedrooms with attached, modern baths; a large open area with an up-to-date kitchen; adjacent dining and living space; and two additional lanais, one of which is off the bedrooms with beautiful ocean views. The house accommodated our group of six adults and two children beautifully during our seventeen-day stay there. We enjoyed the location in a more rural and authentic Hawaiian setting. Lush rain forests, beautiful waterfalls and streams, and varied topography lent themselves to sightseeing and hiking. The cove itself allowed the snorkelers in our group to view a variety of tropical fish, sea turtles that make daily visits to feed on submerged lava rocks, and even an eel or two. Do not be deterred by worries about the weather here. Periodic afternoon and evening rains helped keep the temperatures in check and refreshed the air. Lightweight rain jackets permitted us to complete all planned activities. The hikes on the Kilauea crater rim and the floor of the Ike caldera were first rate. The short walk to the petroglyphs, fascinating. And the hike along the nearby cliffs of Mackenzie Park spectacular. We visited the Hawaiian Botanical Gardens, which we thought superior to the World Botanical Gardens. We also thought the visit to the astronomy museum on Hilo superior to the visitor center at Mauna Kea. We enjoyed both the Lyman Museum in Hilo and the visitor center at Volcanoes National Park for the background on the origins of the islands. We eschewed the commercial tours simply because there were so many things to do on our own. If you wish to experience a bit of the local culture, try the Farmers' Market just north of Pahoa on Sunday or the Wednesday evening market in Kalapana, with its produce, music and food. The town of Pahoa has everything needed for a stay at Royal Cove. We visited Hilo only for the sites and museums. Our seventeen days at the house were wonderful. The owners were friendly and accommodated every need. We would recommend this place to anyone wishing to experience a real Hawaiian vacation. We have stayed on the west side of the island before and much preferred the quieter atmosphere of Royal Cove. Jim and Lani Telander, San Luis Obispo California
