Comfortable cottage with lots of nearby nature activities
As a family of seven with several small children, we were looking for a modest cabin / cottage close to nature within 1.5 hours of Boston. We had a great visit. The owner, Lisa, is very nice and she did a great job orienting us to the place. We stayed for four days. The cottage itself is clean and comfortable -- having three bedrooms with two full baths was great for us given our family size. The only meaningful negative about the cottage is that the piped water sometimes has a brownish color. This is iron in the water which isn't harmful, but takes getting used to (we drank bottled water!). Note that mobile phones tend not to work well given how rural the place is, but the cottage has internet access which was very helpful. There is also a washer / dryer which we appreciated. Lisa even let us have her share of fruits / vegetables from the community farm up the street which was kind of her and provided two great meals for us (fresh blueberries, raspberries, tomatoes, lettuce, garlic, etc.). The location itself is on a pond without swimming, but there is a lake nearby (Lake Gilmore, about 10 minutes away) that we drove to and swam in. We hiked Little Monadnock and picked berries at Monadnock Berries. Rhododendron State Park is also gorgeous and a rainforest-like feel (but bring your bug spray). Perfect activities for children. In late July / early August, there were very few people around (we counted six people on all of Little Monadnock) -- most people I guess go to the Cape -- but we enjoyed the calmness and serenity of the area. This is the place to get away if you want privacy and calmness in the summer, not the crowds of Cape Cod. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and would recommend it to others.
