We had a great time VW van exploring from Lahaina to Hana and in between! We could not have enjoyed some of these spots without the use of this van. With a stick shift transmission there were several hundred shifts made between the airport and Hana, but the van ran generally well. The older van certainly had it's quirks but consistently was dependable. In a buggy situation we found a roll of duct tape helpful to close gaps in the rear door mosquito netting. For ventilation, side window nets would also be helpful, but we did just fine without. Heather was responsive to our initial emails and furnished all items needed to go camping on the island. If you want showers and toilets, camping options are somewhat limited and reservations highly recommended. We camped (wanting showers and toilets) at Camp Olowahu, YMCA Camp Keane, and Wai'anapanapa State Park. Wai'anapanapa State Park in Hana was our favorite with a multitude of activities from hiking options to lounging on beautiful beaches and the small town feel. I would give a 5 star rating but the age of the VW van and its quirks dropped this to a 4 star rating. If you are willing to be adventuresome this is a great way to explore Maui, away from the busier resort beaches.
