Charming retreat... a must stay!
My husband and I made the best decision to stay at Hale Kamuela for the first part of our vacation. Driving through Royal Hawaiian Estates brings you to this hidden gem situated among the tall trees and relaxing sounds of the chirping tropical birds. The sounds from the invasive coqui frogs are either enchanting or annoying. You decide. We closed the windows at night because it gets quite cool. A peaceful and cozy retreat with all the comforts of home. The kitchen is fully stocked. Maybe just need soy sauce? Oh and bring drinking water because the house is on a rain catchment system. Just minutes from Volcanoes National Park, (open 24 hours) it gives you the opportunity to hike any of the trails (we hiked Kilauea Iki) or view Halema'uma'u Crater at night to see the eerie glow. Hilo and its attractions and restaurants are less than 30 minutes away. We enjoyed seeing Rainbow Falls, the Farmer's Market on Saturday, and Ken's House of Pancakes (open 24 hours). The oxtail is yummy and the tuna mac salad is really good. Oh, also try The Seaside Restaurant and Aqua Farm (great seafood/steaks) and Suisan Fish Market (best poke!). If time permits, we highly recommend renting a bike at the end of Highway 130 in Kalapana to view the current lava flow from Puo'o crater into the ocean. It's definitely a sight to see just after sunset! Finally, the best part was that James (owner) was very responsive to any questions that we had. He was great to work with and very informative. We highly recommend staying here and would stay here again! It gives you the opportunity to experience the East side of the Big Island.
