Very private and country feeling
We stayed for 3 days in the Calhoun Cottage in late December. It was great having Nancy, the owner, nearby in case we had issues and to help us with directions and driving conditions since there was some snow. That was one of the reasons we stayed here. I didn't want to stay some place where you have no one around in case there are issues. After it snowed I called Nancy about driving and she assured me it would be fine since I didn't have a 4 wheel drive. If you come during heavy snow season you may need a 4 wheel drive. We also needed some advice on attractions and Nancy gave us some great tips. It snowed on our second day and it was great being able to walk around the property and play in the snow, it is very private and the closest house is a couple of hundred yards away and is owned by the owners and other family. The cottage is very country and cozey. It was kept warm for being very old. If we had more time we would have hiked around the property as there is a river and creek nearby. There were 5 of us. The cottage isn't huge but we didn't spend much time in the cottage as we were out and about doing things, but it is was fine for our family of 5 and would be fine with a few more prople. If you have more people you will probably need air mattresses although there was a couch that could be used for sleeping. My family had never seen snow so the most exciting part was waking up to about 3 inches of snow and being able to walk around the property taking pictures and such. We drove 35 minutes to visit the town of Blowing Rock, went ice skating in Sugar Mtn about 20 minutes away, did some hiking all within 20 minutes and snow tubing. Any time we needed something Nancy was available and could not have been more helpful and accommodating. The property is within 25 minutes or so of all the major areas like Boone and Banner Elk.
