Breezy, simple, peaceful comfort.
Pua Malu was the last stop on an island-wide, ten-day trip this month, and while I loved everywhere I explored on Hawai'i, this cottage--and neighboring towns Hawi and Kapa'au-- were really special. The cottage is a little over a mile up a neighborhood road from highway 270, tucked down a dirt driveway and surrounded by bamboo and fruit trees. It was very windy when we arrived, and the bamboo knocking and whipping in the wind is loud-- but not in the same stressful sort of way that traffic or bad neighbors are! Accommodations are clean, spacious, and very well constructed-- the shower is a real treat (large pebbles make up the floor, massaging your feet while you rinse). A huge porch is the perfect place for breakfast, and the kitchen is fully equipped-- although you may not need to cook, with the wealth of fresh fruit available! The cottage runs on solar power, but you won't find any difference in your ability to use lights or appliances, and Dawn and Lee will run a generator for a half hour if it's cloudy, just to re-up the power store. Hawi and Kapa'au--just a few miles apart-- are really special. They're one-road towns, quiet but warm, and filled with galleries and a few (but delicious) places to eat. For a bigger-town excursion, Waimea (Kamuela) is just a 30 minute drive, but you'll wish it was longer-- the mountain road there is gorgeous. Dawn and Lee are not hovering hosts, giving you plenty of space to enjoy your vacation, but they do live on the property and are very, very friendly and helpful in case you drive the wrong way in or need help with lights/shower temperature/anything else with the cottage. We'll certainly return, and recommend the cottage to any traveler looking for a wonderfully unexpected and unique Hawaiian experience.
