Nice Mountain Cabin With a Few Drawbacks
This cabin located behind a security gate in the "Top of Boone" community is a very nice retreat. It's newly painted and comfortably furnished. We found a few things that were not disclosed in the listing and were slightly misleading. The view shown is "on the way" to the cabin. The cabin is located in the woods. On Memorial Day with all the leaves on the trees there's no view. We found spectacular views of Boone at the nearby (stout hike or short drive) Walter's Knob Park. You have to share the cabin and its parking lot with a downstairs tenant. Once the downstairs occupant realized we had rented the cabin he parked one of his vehicles in front of the other, leaving plenty of room for us. There's another parking space on the road available, too. We soon learned that backing the car down the steep driveway was the best thing to do. If you don't like backing up that could be a problem. There are no window or door coverings in the main area of the cabin, raising privacy concerns that you shouldn't have to worry about in a secluded vacation rental in the mountains. The floor of the cabin was spotlessly clean, the refrigerator not so much. The kitchen was well-furnished but could have been better organized. Some of the hodge-podge of pots and pans could be cleared out. There were no butter, paring, or chef's knives in the dinnerware collection. It was interesting trying to slice a banana with a meat cleaver! The coffee maker is a fancy Cuisinart that insists on grinding beans before making coffee. No beans--you wing it. Graffiti as bathroom decoration is tacky. Other VRBO rentals we've enjoyed have provided information about the property and surrounding attractions/restaurants. Here we found nothing. Had to call the owner to find out about the wifi, which worked well and was fairly speedy. The deck furniture was ripped and broken folding chairs which need to be thrown away. Folding chairs inside the sliding door to the cabin in bags would be preferable. There was a nice fire pit and left-over wood from a previous rental. Bring your own matches and a candle for romantic lighting. There are no reading lights by the beds but there are 3 (!) TVs in the cabin. This cabin is an excellent value for the money. That said, It's got quite a few rough edges. We won't be going back.
Family owned cabin 2 miles to the town of Boone. Gated and safe for family!
