Excellent location, rental needs sprucing up
This rental is located in a great spot for exploring the beach communities in and around LA. Kristin was very easy to deal with before booking and checked in with us once we arrived by text, otherwise we had no contact with her. A man showed up a bit after we arrived and basically barged in while we were relaxing inside because he wanted to make sure the previous guests had not left anything in the fridge. We reassured him that it was fine and that we had now unpacked our own stuff and everything in the fridge was ours, but he basically walked in and looked in the fridge despite our mild protests. Given that he was a stranger to us, his insistence on entering made us feel uncomfortable. The cottage is kept clean and adequately furnished and the kitchen is well stocked with everything you might need while on vacation. Pros- Spacious cottage, private garden, beautiful and safe neighborhood, convenient location for exploring LA and Malibu. Kitchen is well stocked, lots of new towels in bathroom and nice new sheets, cottage is kept clean despite age of certain furnishings and bathroom, (sofa and armchair) are new and have been changed since the photos. Cons- besides the new living room furniture, many other items (bedroom furniture, bathroom, kitchen countertop, dining chair cushions, extra blankets) are old and overly worn. We were expecting a higher-end place from the photos and given the price, it did not feel like a good value even considering the location. All seating (outside and in) is uncomfortable (never thought I'd complain about something like that, but when every single chair and sofa is hard and uncomfortable, it gets to you), old bathroom (cracked floor tiles, peeled paint on shower door, spluttering faucet and very poor volume and pressure in shower). We would have liked to take out the garbage throughout our stay, but there were no instructions on garbage days and when it was ok to put it out. Thankfully there was a disposal in the sink so we were only left with dry garbage. Given that we were staying in her backyard for a week, a little hello would have made us feel more welcome and we would have asked about the garbage, but given our brusque encounter with the man at the beginning of our stay, we didn't feel very comfortable. Multiple windows do not have curtains, which didn't feel very private, especially at night. This combination of cons made us feel that the rental wasn't a good value and left us dissappointed.
