Cozy, comfortable vacation retreat & amazing views
When we look for vacation rentals, we look for places which offer character without sacrificing comfort. The Bird House nailed this. The house is built to take advantage of its view with huge windows on each of its floors and a lovely wrap around deck with picnic table. The first floor was ideal for cozying up with a book, settling into conversation and sharing a meal (there was also a bathroom cleverly tucked into the closet for the water heater), the second floor had two cozy bedrooms and a bathroom (with a rainfall shower head) met its purposes well, and the third served as a marvelous aerie with amazing views and two comfy rocker/ottoman combos. Second, the house has wonderful character--we loved the colors and the decorations as they perfectly captured the feel of a beach house. We also appreciated all of the books about NL. Finally, the amenities were modern and in good condition--fridge, stove, washer and dryer. Though it was not a problem for us, there is not much privacy in the house as the walls and floors are not insulated. The stairs might prove tough for folks with limited mobility, too. In terms of location, we could not have asked for better. We did a ton of driving while we were in NL (4200 miles!), so we did not mind hour to hour and a half day trips to get to the neighboring peninsulas. Though we admit we quickly became biased toward the Birdhouse, we didn't see a neater spot or cozier house or community in our travels than the one we were renting. The better known town of Trinity seemed to have more to offer in terms of restaurants and nightlife, but we prefer to cook in and stayed in at night reading or playing games. Wish we had known to stock up on groceries before heading out to the house, though, as there were very limited options for produce once we arrived. Jane, the owner was wonderful, offering travel suggestions in the months prior to our arrival and then proving wonderfully responsive when a couple of questions came up during our stay. Just as impressive was Gord, the caretaker, who had to come by to fix a ripped screen. In a classic example of NL friendliness, Gord got to chatting with us and soon offered to take us fishing. Thanks to Gord's skill as a fisherman, we reeled in a couple cod which served as the basis for perhaps the finest fish I have ever eaten. In the end, our only regret was that we didn't rent for longer and that it will likely be a while before we return to "the Rock"!
