Our home away from home: The Georgian Bay retreat that exceeded our expectations
We just came back from spending a week at this wonderful cottage. Our group included adults, seniors as well as young children and a toddler. The pictures will never do justice as experiencing this residence in person is much preferred! Our family has never explored this area of Ontario so we were basing our research on Google searches, Maps, reviews and Streetview. The proximity to the nearby towns of Midland, Penetanguishine and Port McNicoll provided all of the amenities we needed just like home. The cottage itself is fairly large, three full bedrooms and two bathrooms which comfortably accommodates two families. The residence is split into the two main areas by a large main hallway which houses large storage closets. All of the bedrooms include wall hooks, dressers, ceiling fans etc… The living and eating area has loads of seating oriented towards the water. The kitchen has oodles of storage space and includes more than enough amenities for cooking and eating. Beware the electrical circuits are easily overloaded when using multiple appliances at the same time. The large concrete upper level deck provides a nearly 180 degree view of the water perfect as the sun goes down. There is no need for air conditioning as the cooling effect of the prevailing winds blow directly into the residence. Large ceiling fans help to circulate the cooling air throughout the building. There is a patio table with chairs and BBQ on the deck as well as clothesline. I think the basement is the bonus area which is perfect for the kids. There is an additional common space with TV/DVD and futon as well as a fourth bedroom with two singles. The second bathroom, laundry room, garage access and mudroom are located on the walkout basement floor. The beach toys, paddles, life vests, towels etc can all be found in the mudroom while adult bicycles can be found in the garage. Don’t panic because there is no dryer, the winds will dry your clothes on the line located on the upper deck in no time chemical free! The grounds are very tidy and well maintained. The lower waterfront wood deck has seen better days but serve its purpose for those overseeing the little ones playing on the beachfront or campfire. We canoed over to nearby Mackenzie park where there is a beach and play structure. This area is known for its typical cottage lifestyle such as beaches, boating and water sports. We knew that the beaches in this area would be good if not spectacular. If the crowds of touristy Wasaga Beach aren’t you’re thing then a quick drive to Balm Beach or Lafontaine Beach is a good stress reliever. There are so many beach options and hidden gems up and down Georgian Bay. For the younger ones, we visited Castle Village, Elmvale Zoo and Blue Mountain Resort (even managed to check out the Elvis Festival). For the seniors, we took at scenic boat cruise around Beausoleil Island and the Honey Harbour area aboard the Miss Midland followed up with a tasty seafood dinner at the Boathouse Eatery located on the Midland docks. There is so much to see and do in the area that we will definitely be back. Regards, Team Rahim Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
