Historic Jewel on a Mountain Lake
Oh, what a fabulous experience! Lake Summit Nest is a charming cottage on the grounds of a great old North Carolina summer home. My husband and I arrived late on a Saturday afternoon after a hard, eight-hour drive from Florida. The owners were extremely gracious, first guiding us by phone as we navigated the meandering road around Lake Summit, then giving us a tour of their boat house -- nestled on a quiet cove across the road from the main house. Guests are given full access to the boat house as well as complete use of kayaks, beach chairs, swim noodles, etc. The cottage itself overlooks the woods and the main house, a historic property known as Interlochen that was built in the early 1920s by a Spartanburg banker and mill owner who co-founded Lake Summit. The cottage has a wide front porch complete with wooden rocking chairs, and the open-concept interior is light and cheerful with lots of large windows that open wide and keep the house comfortable in the mountain climate. It is extremely clean and well-appointed, too. Guests are provided with linens, soap, paper towels, cooking utensils, dishware, glasses, books, magazines, games -- even a basket filled with toiletries and supplies that travelers might forget. The kitchen was thoughtfully stocked with delicious banana bread from The Fresh Market, fruit, juices, snacks, chocolate, tea and coffee. Bliss! I want to stress that this is a vacation for people who enjoy peace and quiet and the serenity of nature. If you like sleeping with the windows open, taking long walks, reading on the porch, swimming in a mountain lake -- this is for you. We took day trips to Saluda, Hendersonville, Flat Rock, Tryon and Asheville -- all close by. If you have the time, the gardens and grounds of the old estate merit exploring, too. There are lovely, old stone paths, a badminton court in the woods, a steep, wooded drive with a long glimpse of the lake. We loved our visit to this sweet North Carolina cottage and hope to someday return. The beauty of this place stays with you -- heart and soul -- long after you leave.
