Nice country getaway!
My partner and I rented the property for four nights. We had a lovely time. The house itself is adorable and roomier than you'd expect from the outside. The photos do not do the interior justice. The kitchen was well-stocked with cooking implements, though we would've appreciated a larger garbage pail for the size of the trash bags provided. The balcony was a favorite spot for us, and the views across the cornfield were everything we could've hoped for: blue skies and fluffy clouds and even a nice glimpse of the bay. I can't say enough great things about the property and gardens: bee balm and eucalyptus and hummingbirds and hummingbird moths. Our afternoons couldn't have been more tranquil, and that's exactly what we were after. The upstairs bed was very comfortable, while the one downstairs was very firm, so depending on how you like to sleep, there's something for everyone. We appreciated the streaming video options (Netflix, Amazon, HBO) and flat-screen television. The tub wasn't working properly when we arrived, but the owner quickly took care of that for us. (Thanks again, Toni!) The bathroom was roomy and elegant, with decent water pressure in the upstairs shower. Nice leather furnishings, if a bit sticky on 90-degree days. Our only reservation was the bug and spider situation. Now, we get it: this is a country house. But any arachnophobic vacationers will want to think carefully before considering this place. Come nightfall, any light inside the house will draw insects--and they will get inside. Closing the windows was not an option for us, since temperatures were well into the late 70s at night, and there was little to no breeze (the owner did provide fans, which were a big help). Replacing the old screens on the windows and sliding doors to the porch (which is really more of an outdoor space, considering how rustic it is) would likely help stop some of the smaller bugs and spiders from getting in. There must've been two dozen spiders inside the house itself, not counting the palm-sized wolf spiders roaming the porch every night. Again, we get it. Country house and all. And we're fully aware this may just be our personal hang-up. However, we believe people should know what they're getting into. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. If you're looking for a relaxing, PRIVATE getaway in the Champlain Islands, then look no further. This place is a real gem. Also, check out Wally's Place in South Hero for awesome breakfast sandwiches.
