Perfect location, perfect stay, terrific hosts
The location is perfect. Tucked in a small, "campground feel" neighborhood a few minutes from the beach. I fell in love and moved down the street and refer friends and family to Pirate Lover when they visit. I can't say enough about the economy of staying at Pirate Lover: For less than a hotel room you have all the comforts of home, yet you know you're at the ocean by the décor that surrounds you. Stove, microwave, dishwasher and all the dishes and other conveniences down to sheets and towels, you save a ton. Cook "at home" instead of having to track down restaurants three (or two) times a day. $100.00 fed my family of four for the most part for the week, leaving extra to enjoy the local restaurants. There's a washer/dryer so you can keep up with the laundry, one less worry upon your return home. There's a Food Lion grocery store,Walgreens, Dollar General and Family Dollar (brand new) just around the corner, and plenty of tourist attractions and souvenir shops without feeling like a commercial tourist community. Domino's delivers; there's a Chinese restaurant and Subway and a "fast food" eatery, Surfer's Café at the local shopping center. Ginny's Chicken Shack is great for cheap breakfast or lunch, and along the causeway there are a bunch of other great restaurants. In the dead of summer on a weekend day there's plenty of elbow room at the beach. Enjoy pelicans and porpoises (but watch out for jellyfish), and of course "shop" at the beach: We found a number of sand dollars among our treasure finds. Everything I've described is less than five minutes from Pirate Lover. You can scoot up to Shallotte (about 15 minutes away) for many other great restaurants (including familiar chains), Wal-Mart for provisions. Be sure to check out the many local farm stands as well as Holden Bros. on Route 17 just south of Shallotte. Fruits and vegetables here are AMAZING, whatever's in season! Holden Beach is noted as one of America's "top ten family beaches" by Conde Nast. It's everything we wanted. But there's so, so much more just a short drive away. Historic sites, tourist attractions… Myrtle Beach to the south, Wilmington to the north, and depending on how far you care to drive it's a great starting point to see so much along the southern east coast. The owners continue to make improvements and they bend over backwards to accommodate their guests. I (and visiting family members) highly recommend Pirate Lover!
