Unusual and unexpected experience
The owner was flexible with our arrival once I told her that we were five people driving from Boston and were not sure what time we would be arriving. We arrived at 9:45 pm EST, exhausted after a long day of traveling. The key was where she said it would be. When we got in, we found a nicely appointed home with a handwritten set of instructions, soap, shampoo, coffee, and popcorn. The temperature in the ground floor of the house was a comfortable 74 degrees F. When we got upstairs, we were hit with the heat! Three bedrooms, one bath, very pretty but...extremely hot!!!! It was stifling in there! In addition, there were no closets or drawers to put our things. There was a stainless steel rack in the smallest bedroom with four or five hangers. We felt that this was not appropriate storage for a group of 5 people. However, if the AC would have worked properly, I would have called the owner in the morning and requested more hangers. The problem was the heat and stuffiness in the second floor. There was a fan in the master bedroom. We tried lowering the temperature of the thermostat and waited about an hour to see if the upstairs would be better. The vents in the upper level did not blow very hard so we decided that it would be impossible to sleep comfortably there. Our phone thermometers read 90 degrees Fahrenheit upstairs when we left! I tried calling the owner on the phone but did not get an answer. We had to go to a hotel. She and I spoke on the phone the next morning. She offered a window unit and was extremely defensive when I mentioned that there was not appropriate storage or hanging space. I declined the window unit because all 5 of us felt that it would not have been enough for the 3 bedrooms, especially the last bedroom, which is at the end of the hall. This is the first time in my 10+ years of renting with VRBO that the property didn't have closets or drawers or any kind of storage. After much going back and forth, until today, August 18th, she has not kept her word regarding the reimbursement she agreed to with me (even though I have a text that says that she always keeps her word). She sent me threatening emails and accused me of lying. She kept saying that the HomeAway website told her what to reimburse and there are "fees" that HomeAway will charge me. This last fact was denied by Maria, from HomeAway. There is not enough space to tell the whole story, but in summary, I would not rent this property.
