More Than Meets the Eye
Scallop Island is a lovely property that is difficult to capture with photos. The water aspects are unique, it is like being at two different shorelines at high and low tide. At low tide, the firm bottom can be waded out hundreds of yards and at high tide one can swim at the dock and swim out hundreds of yards and still be able to stand. While oysters are prevalent at the reed line, we found the bottom to be free of any hazards out from the dock. This is a wonderful waterfront for small children as they can swim in whatever depth of water desired. The dock platforms and stairs provide very easy access to the water at all tides. Our dogs greatly enjoyed the run of the island and the water access. The house appears modest from the outside but is very nicely laid out inside.. The kitchen is very large and well equipped. The grounds are well kept and access to the Newport River dock and the Wading Creek dock make for nice strolls. The kayaks are fun for all with lots to explore at high tide. A constant southwest wind was present for our stay and there were no bugs whatsoever. The house is a close drive from the seafront towns of Beaufort and Morehead City with their shops and restaurants and a visit to the North Carolina Aquarium, 30 minutes away, is certainly worthwhile. The ferry to Cape Lookout and the climb of the Lighthouse provides a spectacular view of the Barrier islands , which look more like the Caribbean than the Atlantic Seaboard. The town of New Bern, one hour to the north, is lovely and well worth the trip. This house is an excellent rental value and provides a wonderful base of operations as well as offering its own activities and enjoyments. The owners were wonderful to deal with.
