The cabin is in a nice setting, but a little more off of the beaten path than I would have liked. This was our anniversary weekend and we had reservations Friday night and Saturday night in Highlands. It was roughly 10 or 12 miles from Highlands but because of the curvy roads that you can't go much more than 25 miles an hour on, it takes 30 minutes no matter which way you go. Friday night our GPS took us away from town on 64 East to Buck Creek Rd. which is over 8 miles of switchbacks. It was a nerve racking drive back at night with the pouring rain and the fog. You can basically go 2 ways to town. You can also leave Highlands and take 64 West and turn right on Buck Creek Rd. and only drive on that road for 2 miles. I would recommend if you stay here, to take the gorge road 64 West back . It is curvy also but has reflectors down the center and makes it an easier drive. The drive up into the cabin is a gravel narrow road that sometimes allows just one car but not terrible after you get used to it. The cabin is nicely decorated and mostly comfortable. The gas fireplace has instructions for turning on but isn't done with a flip of a switch. I let the owner know about a couple of issues like no wine opener (we fortunately brought our own). Another thing was stone had been installed in the bathrooms on the floors and the shower surround. The doors to the bathrooms needed to be cut off because they scratched the stone and were difficult to close. All in all, I can see if you were going to be up there for a week that it would be a nice setting and you would get used to how to drive into town and to the hikes. For our situation, we would have preferred to stay in town. Our weekend wasn't good weather it poured rain most of the time so we didn't get to enjoy the setting as much. We shopped in Franklin on Saturday because people told us that the shops in Highlands were too expensive. On Sunday we got a hike done to Glen Falls which was nice and then shopped in Highlands. Actually the shops there are more interesting and an item we had bought in a kitchen store in Franklin was $ 5.00 cheaper in Highlands. Go figure! There is a nice outdoor store in Franklin though. On the last day it was sunny when we woke, so we packed the car and enjoyed a nice hike at Whiteside Mountain on our way home which I highly recommend.
