Snow Birding to the Ultimate Heights and Distance (from Illinois) Dec 30 through March, 2016!
If you like living in a tropical Hawaiian rain forest, then this is the place for you! We loved living for three months in Patty's house, a new ( 2 to 3 years old) one BR, one BA house about 10 miles from Hilo. It is well kept, and the rooms are large. We had no trouble living our "normal" lifestyle in this house. Patty was quick to replace a light bulb, and offer suggestions for places to visit. We did appreciate the infrared heater at night. And the bananas from the tree in the back yard were great. The pictures of the property on the VRBO website were true and accurate. The road to the property was a typical smooth lava road with lots of dips (like a roller coaster), but easily navigable. However, don't trust your GPS; it takes you over un-paved or rough-paved lava rock roads with deep potholes. Most maps actually show dotted lines for the majority of streets in this subdivision...they mean the road is likely roughly graded lava rock. PLEASE trust Patty's directions, and you will be fine. Plumeria Street is very smooth comparably. Also, if your GPS says it will take you 45 minutes to go 10 miles, trust it! You will need your own transportation; Hilo public transportation does not even get close to the house. We rented a 2016 Chevy Impala and managed all roads well (except those designated absolutely for 4WD only). In fact, most of the roads are very nice to travel on. We had made a "To Do" list of places to go and see, and we had no trouble getting to any of them. We put 2,700+ miles on our rental car during the time we were there. Lots of beautiful places to visit, for sure. Our favorites: listening to the Melodious Laughing Thrush during the day, listening to the mezmersing Coqui frogs at night (especially after a rain), traveling in all directions along the coast lines to see Hawaii Island's beauty, trying all the "local" food, going to the many, many farmer's markets on the island, getting up at 2:00 a.m. to see the Volcano at night, drinking fresh-ground, locally grown coffee, and soaking my arthritic body in the lava-heated water (thanks to Kilauea Volcano) near Kapoho. For mail, you'll have to settle for General Delivery at Mountain View, Kea'au, or Kurtistown (the closest towns). Our rental security deposit was returned almost before we arrived back home on the mainland. It was a pleasure to have Patty for our landlord for 3 months. We would absolutely consider this property again if given the opportunity.
