Gorgeous place with stunning views
We (family of 4 - 2 adults, 2 kids aged 8 and 13) just had a wonderful few days in Kate's place. The house is simply breathtaking - beautiful, contemporary style. We had two bedrooms and a kitchenette off the main part of the house but used her big kitchen as well; the kids used the living area in the main part of the house to watch DVDs. Kate is a lovely host - easy going, laid back, unobtrusive so we never felt we were in the way. We barbecued on the patio outside and breakfasted there each day to watch to sunrise over the ocean. We fell in love with her two cheeky dogs, Albert the jack Russell and Mo the Australian cattle dog. She showed us round her horses (we meant to fix up a trail ride with her but time ran away with us!). We collected avocados from the garden and explored the grounds. The ranch is in a great location - 20 minutes north of Hilo, 50 minutes south of Waipi'o Valley - and there are loads of activities to do close by. We went horseback riding in the Waipi'o valley (with Naalapo Stables), zip lining at KopohoKine Adventures (fantastic!), hiking down a lava tube at Kaumana, great beaches for snorkeling east of Hilo (Richardson's Bay park was a lovely spot). Waterfalls (Akaka and Rainbow Falls close by). And the visitor center at Mauna Kea to watch the sunset and look at the stars was a highlight (but cold!) The east coast around Hilo is much quieter than the west but lush, green and fantastic for outdoor activities. Kate's home made it a very special part of our holidays. I can't thank her enough. And just wish we lived closer to come back again! Thanks a million, Kate! And give the dogs a cuddle from the kids.
