Lovely Property in a Great Location, but needs Amenities
We stayed here for several days after Christmas. The home is attractive and spacious, and very well located right next to the West Entrance of the Park, as well as backing up onto it from the backyard. It's also close to Pioneertown. The home was clean, and rooms were spacious. The kitchen was well stocked with supplies. Guests should be aware that the 3rd bedroom is on a lower level, and only accessible through a separate outside door. It would be fine for older children or a couple. Linens and towels were clean and plentiful. The home heated up well, and there was Wi-Fi. Having stayed at a number of different rental homes in Big Bear, Ojai, and elsewhere, this property was lacking in the amenities one normally finds in vacation homes, particularly at this premium price range. The hot tub was lovely, but took a full 2 1/2 days to heat up, not the 12 hours stated in the notebook. There was no washer/dryer, which, considering the amount of hiking and climbing one does at JT, is really necessary. There was "satellite/cable TV" advertised, but only major networks and a few local stations. No ESPN, CNN, and certainly no HBO, Showtime or Netflix! No DVD player. There was a Netflix remote, but it didn't work. NO instructions on how to work the remotes, and there were several. In fact, instructions and helpful hints were lacking in pretty much every respect: only one menu from a local eatery, no maps or guidebooks of the area, no help to the tourist with regard to local events or activities. No stereo or music hookup of any kind, not even a dock or remote speaker to plug your iPhone into for music while reading, relaxing or eating dinner. NO books or games whatsoever (most places have a few). The fireplace had one "starter" wax log, no matches or igniter, and no instructions on operating the flue (we were told to call if we wanted instructions). Most homes seem to offer at least one starter bundle of firewood, and the complete absence of matches and instructions led us to believe that the owners really didn't want people using the fireplace, despite advertising it as an amenity. There was also no soap for the showers or tub. Who expects to bring their own soap to a rental home? Our last day there, the toilet in the hallway bathroom overflowed, causing a horrible mess. Nice place but it needs to be made into a home.
