You gotta stay here if you are gluten free!
We enjoyed our 11 night stay at the Gluten Free House on the Big Island of Hawaii in March, 2016. It is on the southern end of the island, about half way between Hilo and Kona. We thought it would be perfect, as it would allow us to explore the whole area, both ways, while staying in one spot. Do realize, though, that you have to drive two-lane windy and crooked roads to get from here to popular tourist destinations and beaches. If you are alright with that, and if you want seclusion and quiet, then stay here. The location did make us get out and explore the island, however. If we had stayed at a city location, we would have never driven this far out, or discovered all the "local" beaches and sights. The Aloha room was great; nice big bed and bathroom, along with outdoor kitchen and washer and dryer. Sandy and her husband were always helpful with information and directions. The breakfast she served every day was over-the-top, with a different PERFECT GF bread and tropical fruit each time, in addition to the meat and eggs. Her homemade syrup is delicious! Breakfast held us over until about 2, when we finally grabbed a light lunch. The breakfast alone is a good reason to stay here, gluten free or not. Sandy has a notebook full of places to see and eat on the south side. I would note that there aren't a lot of places to eat out around here, and not a lot of gluten free choices. If you are planning on romantic evenings with cocktails and gourmet meals, all dressed up, well, there aren't many close places to go! You will have to travel to the Kona or Hilo area to find these. You can, however, cook your own meals, with groceries available at a store a few miles down the road. Some gluten free items available there, also. Everything in the kitchen that you might need to prepare your own meals. And Sandy does the dishes! The Gluten Free House is a great value, especially with the outstanding breakfasts and comfy room. We would highly recommend it.
