This was our family's (5 people) first trip to Hawaii. The first half of our trip we spent around Waikiki beach and the other half at the Makaha Valley Retreat. Before booking this place I talked to Natalie and she was remarkably helpful and kind so we decided to go for it (this was our first time booking through VRBO). The property is about 30-40 minutes away from the touristy attractions so make sure you get a car. The place is very nice (as advertised), quiet, and secure. Although you have to drive for a while to get to Honolulu, we didn't mind it. You can easily make a day trip out of it and go back to your quiet home for the evening. The beach is about a 30 minute walk and about a 2 minute drive. The beach and the water were amazing (way better than Waikiki). Also, the people in the town were the most friendly we have interacted with on any trip. Also, it was nice to be with more local people. The property also has two pools with hot tubs, all in good shape. If we were to go back to Hawaii, I will certainly make a point of contacting Natalie again.
