Dirty, unsafe and not private
The good news is that it's a great location, with ocean view and it's very quiet once the other guests settle in for the night. Also, the owner did move us to a more private room when we complained about the total lack of privacy. The bad news is, it is not clean, there is little privacy, and there are fire hazards. Any item placed on the floor of our room was soon swarming with cockroaches. The site description does mention bugs--and we're nature-lovers--but neither of us had ever seen so many roaches anywhere before, including L.A. When we arrived, we were “upgraded” to the biggest room--but we soon realized that the sliding glass doors were in full view of the foot traffic of the entire complex, so that we had to keep the drapes drawn at all times. In that room, every single word from the neighboring guests was audible, because there was only a sliding Japanese-style paper screen separating us from them—with a wall hanging to conceal it. Also, the microwave on the lanai was only a few feet from our bed, separated from us by nothing more than cantilevered glass, and we were startled awake in the middle of the night by beeps, whirring and door slamming whenever other guests heated up cups of tea. In the bathroom, the cantilevered glass window was removed and replaced with a flimsy, transparent curtain, making anyone sitting on the toilet visible from the outside. There were wads of tangled electric cords and extension cords out the lanai, where one of the light fixtures was sparking. None of the guests went anywhere near the murky pool or even tried the hot tub, and we witnessed one guest threatening to call the health and fire departments as they left. The central room, the one we first occupied, was cluttered with everything from massage chairs to dead printers. The sliding glass doors to both rooms had poorly-installed padlocks which could have been easily popped off with a screwdriver. The shared cooking facilities consisted of a beat-up camping stove with propane tanks lashed with bike cables to prevent theft. The cooking and eating area was so grubby, cluttered and uninviting that we ended up eating out for every meal, which drove up the cost of our stay, as did the hotel night we paid for in order to get some privacy on our vacation. The innkeeper, means well and is a nice person, but we feel is over his head in managing the place. If he added suitable cooking facilities, reduced the clutter and cleaned up the place, it could be charming.
