Great vacation stay with warm hosts
We stayed 9 days at Papa Bay's while my husband was doing the Ironman Kona competition. It is a bit of drive back and forth between Kona and our accommodations, so I probably wouldn't recommend it for this occasion (we just had no other option as we didn't book things in time and needed a relatively affordable place to stay). However, the stay itself is wonderful. Paul and Sarah are the owners and they were so warm and accommodating. We had our two year old son with us and they offered a nice sleep area for him and also had strollers and car seats available in case we needed them. The room itself is a nice size with a private bathroom and patio. We were greeted with a beautiful platter of fresh tropical fruit that was quite a nice surprise. They have plenty of fruit available so take advantage! You can't get any fresher than picking the papaya itself straight off the tree. The bathroom is well stocked with towels and toiletries. The shared kitchen has everything you need, including pots, pans, silverware, plates, cups, etc. You also don't need to buy any stock pantry items. They have rice, beans, pasta, oil, salt, sugar, spices, coffee, tea, you name it. Paul also has wonderful smoked salmon that he caught and smoked himself in Alaska that he generously shares with you. They also have coolers and ice packs that you can use if you want to drive around the island and keep things fresh. It was quite nice to be out of the city and feel like a part of the island. If you don't mind living in quiet nature (there are some mosquitoes so bring your repellent), this is a nice getaway. The views are spectacular. Just a tip, to get to house, drive down Papa Bay's drive to the very end. The street sign will say Pavement Ends, but keep going. It is just down the street a little further to the left. Because it is so secluded from the major towns, I would recommend renting a car to travel around. Paul also has cars to rent if you need, but no pressure if you find your own rental. I will admit, I was somewhat hesitant at the beginning about how this place would turn out, but was very happy in the end. The hospitality from the owners won us over and there is nothing like taking some time to getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city and sit among the trees and watch the sunset. This is a great vacation spot if you are looking for that getaway to a tropical retreat.
