Fulfilled our needs
This was our first time staying in Paia, and the Hale Nihi "Sunset Unit" proved to be well located for exploring Paia and area. It was an easy walk into town and then to the beach. The winds were significant while we were there and they closed the beach for a couple of days. However there was lots else to do including watching the surfers, windsurfers and kiteboarders do crazy manoeuvres on the big waves. The location was also perfect as a cycling base and we explored much of the area by bike. My husband did the requisite ride up Haleakala and was able to set off at day break right from our unit. Perfect. Many of the other reviews mentioned how much they enjoyed meeting Avis and about her advice regarding things to do. We only saw Avis for a maximum of 5 minutes on our second day (we were there for just under a week), and could never find her after that. We wanted to ask about borrowing a cooler but there was no sign of Avis. She must have been away for much of the time since her car was gone. It would have been nice if she had just mentioned she would be away or even left a note. That would have saved us a lot of time looking for her. The unit itself was just a pictured. It was really all we needed. The air conditioner worked well, which was important during the record breaking heat while we were there. One of the other reviews mentioned the cupboard with all the linens, and that certainly is the case. We did leave the door to the cupboard open because it there was a musty smell. No doubt due to the heat and humidity. We enjoyed our time in the unit and enjoyed exploring Paia. I particularly loved the salad bar at Mana Foods and the ease of grabbing some good quality take out food when we couldn't face cooking. We would definitely recommend Paia and Hale Nihi B&B.
